*Crufts
Apparently I ommited HC/C (Open Dog, Open Bitch) placings from the results page, I have added these tonight, apologies to the exhibitors concerned and congratulations on your Crufts placing.

Whilst I am on Crufts - a big thank you to Roger Bartram for the Crufts photos. I know from my own experience, it is very difficult to take photographs when both dog and bitches are judged simultaneously. You end up rushing from one ring to the other, franticaly trying to capture the moment. When it's busy ringside it can be logistically difficult to go back and forth in time. Roger managed to provide me with a photo of just about all (minus one) class winners, and I am very grateful to Roger for this great effort. As well as the rushing around taking photos, upon arriving at home on Crufts Afghan evening, Roger spent a lot of time sorting through the many photographs he had taken, identifying exhibits and emailing the photos so that I was able to post them the same day. Thanks again Roger for all the extra hard work on sorting and emailing the photos to me.

A couple of the photo's I had to crop from a long distance shot, so if anyone does have a better photograph, please send/email and I will be pleased to replace the existing.

After I posted the first batch of photos, I was able to identify some other other exhibits from the batch of photographs and posted these on the supplementary photo page. There is no method/selection here, they were simply amongst those received and/or I was able to crop, and they are nice photos so I posted them. I'll extend an invitation here to any Crufts exhibitor - if I haven't posted your affie's Crufts photo, and you want it added, then just send/email it and I will gladly add it to the supplementary page (if you do, don't forget to tell me the full name of your affie of course..). Steve

*Carol Reisman
We have received the following:
Date:    Sat, 8 Mar 2003 20:16:02 -0500
From:    David Frei (zoomsdad@earthlink.net)
Subject: Carol Reisman

I have been asked to report some sad news:  Carol Reisman is in Mount Sinai Hospital here in NYC. She was brought here on Thursday night.  Her sisters Fran and Honi are here, as are several other of her close friends.  Fran and Honi wanted me to share with you that Carol needs your prayers and positive thoughts as she fights a real serious battle.  They promise to send updates through the list when they feel it is appropriate.  They appreciate your support, but ask that you don't call the hospital right now.  I was not able to see Carol today, family only, and that is probably the way it will be for quite some time. Here is her address if you would like to send a card:(no flowers):

CAROL REISMAN
Medical ICU 5E
Mount Sinai Hospital
1 Gustave Levy Place
New York NY 10029

I visit the hospital every Wednesday night with one of my dogs to work in animal assisted therapy (but no dogs in ICU), and go also one day on the weekend to visit another friend (Karen Armistead, an Afghan Hound friend). I will continue to check in on both Karen and Carol on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and report back as appropriate.  In the meantime, keep the prayers and cards coming. David Frei

*Karen Armistead
We understand Karen has had a lung operation and continues to battle hard, so keep the prayers and cards coming

More sad news, we heard today that Adam Faith, pop singer and very fine actor, has died of a major heart attack (BBC News link). Picture of Adam and Jackie above, taken last year. Adam and Jackie purchased two afghans out of an outstanding litter by Bondor Serenade and sired by CH Moonraker Of Moonswift. This litter produced 3 Champions (Ch Bondor Dera Ghazi Khan, Ch Bondor Kumari Khanum, and Ch Bondor Azim Khan), Adam and Jackie owned the two brothers Bondor Khohendil Khan and Bondor Zulifikar Khan and who later went into partnership with Roy Wilson and Wally Walker (Khonistan Afghans, UK). I was introduced to Jackie Faith at a N. England Afghan Show by Ian Hodgson (Khonistan) a few years ago and enjoyed chatting with her about Adam the singer and actor. Ian may well have more info on Adam and Jackie's interest and activities in Afghan Hounds.

Elizabeth Harvey Treharne
We have received the following today from Elizabeth Harvey Trehane's daughter...
I am not sure if you had heard but my Mom, Elizabeth Harvey Treharne has passed away she died in her sleep on Friday. She was 84. If you would be so kind to post that news I would appreciate it.

She acquired her first Afghan Hound in 1943 from Mildred Patterson, Milapat Afghans. This female she finished..Ch Baroda Gemi of Milipat, a Rudiki grandaughter. Mom later acquired Roda's 2 littermates, Bogin & Bazsra (males). Bogin was shown within 1 point of finishing and then we (children)came along and she stopped showing. Roda was bred several times back to Rudiki, Ali Khyber and to an import from India that Sunny had but she never conceived.

Mom was great friends with so many wonderful people in Afghans: (oldtimers) Venita Oakie-Oakvardon,Marion Florsheim, Kay Finch-Crown Crest, Charlotte Coffey, Mr. Wernsman-Bevero Downs, Mrs. Sherman Hoyt-Blakleen, Mary Nelson (Stephenson)-Drum Hill, Bud Stephenson-Patrician, Babbie & Bob (Ruth Tongren)-ben Ghazi, Sunny Shay & Dana-Grandeur, Hilda Knudsen (Joanna Kench Owens)-Riverside, Marjorie Jagger (Lathrop)-Majara, Betsy Prior, Cy Rickel, Mary Machett-El Maya (Canada) there are so many more and what she used to call the newcomers that started in the 50's...Nancy & Mel McCarthy-Kharontule, Joan Brearly-Sahadi, Alma Wells, Marge Webber-LaMars, Connie Miller, Dale Henry-Jui Pathan, Werner & Mary Sheldon-Khabiri, Thomas O'Connor-Estioc, Frances Jantos-Provience, Floyd Gale (now Beachbrook), Bill Moore-Moornistan, Boots Bellamy-Bellvicta, Bob Cotes and more and so on into the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's....

Then there was the Art..her father was an Architect born in Belfast Ireland and came to US to further his career..mom used to draw houses as a small child that her father built and was doing Christmas cards as a 10 year old for the owners. She started painting and drawing dogs when she was 11 when she saw her Collie killed by a car. This launched what was a lifelong career. Started studying art with Charles Chapman (fine artist) When about 16 she started experimenting painting on Glassware when she saw an article in the newspaper about painting on glass. She bought a kiln from Lindbergh and perfected this art. She would paint glassware when she got home from school all week long and then on Friday nights she and her mom & dad would each load 2 suitcases each and go to the train station and go to NY, MD, Wash DC, Phila, Boston etc. to exhibit& sell the work at Dog Shows. She was painting all breeds on every type of glass..highball, plates etc. with clientele of Rockefellers, etc..etc. She also had a line of wooden pins, kennels signs, Christmas Cards and did many letterheards. Her oils and pastels are in many many collections...of Afghans alone..Rudiki, Rudika, Ali Khyber, many Oakvardon dogs, Shirkhan, Sesu, Zoomie, Aries, Johnathan Livingston Seagull, Wizard, Blu Shah, Boy Blue, Swan, Zappa,Triumph (TR), Razum, Graffiti, Rhoda + Kippy & Honey..I am trying to think of others...

She had her judges license for Afghans and loved that as well. She always had a smile and loved and celebrated life. I have two brothers and she has 4 grandchildren.

I was very lucky to have her and if anyone knows me I always referred to her as "Mommy".

*Post Crufts Get Together
John Bloor writes .. By popular request, there will be a post-Crufts gathering for all Afghan Hounds enthusiasts from home or overseas on Sunday 9th March commencing at 12 noon. This is a repeat of a successful gathering that took place in 2001, when Crufts was postponed due to the Foot & Mouth outbreak. The hosts will be Jenny Dove and Vic Harrison (Saringas) and the venue will once again be The Swan Public House, Three Mile Cross, Berkshire, RG7 1AT, which is easily accessible from J11 of the M4 (the Basingstoke turn off). The pub is less than 120 miles (1 3/4 hours) from the Crufts venue - plenty of time to get back for Best In Show. If anyone would like directions, they can ring the pub on 44 (0)118 988 3674 or visit http://www.streetmap.co.uk and search using the Post Code. I am told the food is excellent and it is very reasonably priced. All are welcome and last time everyone had a great time, discussing Afghans and making new acquaintances. It would be especially good to hear from any overseas enthusiasts who would like to attend. If they could email john@pashtari.co.uk so that we have an idea of numbers, I'll pass the information on. I'll also be at Crufts, if anyone wants to ask for me around the Midland Afghan Hound Club stall.

*Afghan Hound Club S. Korea
I have received news of the formation of the Afghan Hound Club Of S. Korea. The correspondent is "Lee" (last name is [Lee], and name is [Jin Hwan]) who is busy building the website. Lee has provided some information in his emails - "Our country is short afghan hound's history. My brindle boy receive R.BIS (Excellent) he around 18 months in May 6, 2001 at [Korea Kennel club 27th Seoul Dog Festival]. (Judging by Jean Lenning . UK) - http://www.we-ryung.com/profile.htm. (Ed note. Jean Lanning is a very well known UK All Rounder Judge). Korean dog show is most ALL BREED SHOW. Dogs came out in show about 1000, but afghan hound was 8 at most that time. Even so, it might be the Korea dog show historic most afghan hounds until that time. Specially, as afghan, my dog was first of that receive title more than BOB . I am only lucky. My dog was looked on TV by request of broadcasting station. My private homepage was begun to inform in Korea, and many people began to be interested about afghan hound that is new breed , but I could not do any counsel to them. Because I am not a person who operate kennel that is special and was thorough amateur about afghan . (Actually, my profession is interior designer and my wife is fashion designer.) .We need more knowledges about afghan hound and need partner who can talk opinion. We tried to scoured web site from that moment, and asked various kinds in foreign breeders with my unskillful English, and find friends who interest is about afghan hound in our country also. 1 year from that moment is last April, 2002, I proposed Korea afghan hound club's formation to people who know meantime. Thereabout, some professional breeders had begun to be interested about afghan hound, but it was not that situation is groovy. Afghan hound signs that increase looked already that become puppy - millers and brokers' target. That first member was 15 people who takes part in club's organization agreing in thinking that "only right manias can keep correct breeding" .(John Kim was one person of them.) Also, 1 year is passing now, we did to register 25 dogs with about 80 members. We were never that number is important. Our most important target limited ybridization and breeding during 1 year. Because serve to avoid that increase puppy according to popular fancy anyway. Before can understand much, and also have mind about correct breeding more about afghan at least. Now we are controlling enough about hybridization of 25 at least. On the one hand, that import a good dog in abroad is thought actively. We prefer that take when they are puppy only. We can learn more things about afghan experiencing their growth. Unsolved part to experience, consults with their breeder . Therefore, members who do not keep own dog up to now selected more circumspectly. If someone of us is going to import a dog from foreign breeder, it is that want together persistent interchange with the breeder anywhere. We study [standard], and communicate with abroad for the most suitable breeding. Also, we think an opportunity that we can attend to foreign dog show may come soon. Therefore, we are that wide database need. Various kinds business for pet is getting into the spotlight in the South Korea now. Pet shop, Handler, groomer, internet shopping mall .... However, most of right breeding are consisting in young kennel of 30 before and behind generation with manias. The Afghan hound Club of Kroea (ACK) is young new birth club. But, our activity and volition are giving fairly encouragement to Korean many breeders and mania, other dog clubs . I convince! In the near future, if world-famous show dog gets born in the South Korea, it may be afghan hound necessarily. Most Korean is some urgent personality, but we never hurry for good result. What reason that we must hurry as wanting to enjoy life with nice dogs? I am sorry my English is not skilful. If meaning is passed not well, it is worry. Best regards... Lee.

Thank you Lee for the insight into S Korean Afghan Hounds. We look forward to your website expanding and hearing more from you. Lee's email is (unitplus@kornet.net)

*Ann Berry (Barakhel Afghans, UK)
We have been informed of the death last week of Ann Berry of Barakhel Afghans UK. Ann was an active breeder, exhibitor, judge for nearly 40 years. Ann's early Afghans included Amudarya Khalaf Of Barakhel b/s dog (Bondor Moonmist x Amudarya Mikhala of Moonswift) who's pedigree has lines back to the brindle Ch Horningsea Tigers Eye and the USA import Ajman Branwen Kandahar. Another early hound was the red bitch Amudarya Shalima of Barakhel (Horningsea Sagittariuis x Amudarya Sahri-Tu Of Jagai), Shalima was a grandaughter of the US Import Ch Wazir Of Desertaire. Another important early hound in Ann's kennel was Keturah of Kohinoor (Ch Ranjitsinhji Of Jagai x Kara of Kohinoor) a red bitch of predominantly Carloway/Bletchingley lineage.

A breeding in 1976 between Barakhel Takhaar of Zaydah (son of Shalima) and Keturah produced one of her best stud dogs Barakhel Flying Dice. A subsequent breeding by Dice with Iroka From Jahadi in 1984 produced Ann's red black masked champion dog Ch Barakhel Forever Free. This was an interesting mating in that the dam Iroka was out of the German import Kunte Kinte Von Katwiga from Jahadi. I am not absolutely sure, but I believe Kunte Kinte was the first Katwiga to be introduced into UK bloodlines. A brother to Dice - Barakhel Fancy Free went to Bev Ward's Chacheran kennel, more on this later.

In retrospect, it seems as if Ann was quite an adventerous breeder as evidenced by her obtaining Khinjan Numbakela Of Barakhel, a son of Australian Ch Coastwind Holyman (Note, Holyman stopped off in the UK en-route to Australia and was used by Khinjan Kennels UK during the stop-off). In 1976 Ann bred a litter sired by the Candadian import Daturrah Nathanael of Moonswift x Anzarah Nyree Seraphim at Barakhel (a grandaugher of Holyman). The overseas interest continues.. In 1990 Ann mated one of her bitches to the imported brown brindle Danish Champion Boxadan Junior Jumper. In 1984 in a collaboration with Bev Ward, Ann obtained Chahcheran Sh'ernnanigans N Barakhel, which introduced the Spanish Branwen bloodlines into Ann's breeding program. In 1996 a Sh'ernnanigans daughter Barakhel Bye Bye Blackbird was mated to the Danish import Ch Boxadan Give Me A Break At Benatone. This litter included Barakhel Tutti Frutti at Chahcheran who is with to Bev Ward in France. I understand there are plans to continue the lines via breeding Tutti Frutti in USA/France, so the Barakhel name will live on in modern pedigrees for some time to come. Farewall Ann, you will be missed by your many friends.

1st January 2003

Happy new year everyone!

Tanny
You might recall the occasional postings I have made re "Tanny" the Afghan bitch that lives with Judy Brandeburg in New Jersey. I have received the following update from Judy on the lovely Tanny...

Tanny is doing well except the tumor has made a reappearance. She'd had her six month checkup on November 12th and three weeks later, I felt it. It's basically in the same area. X-rays showed that her lungs and chest are clear and there is no sign of metastasis. A chemotherapy treatment was done on December 9th. She handled it better than I expected. The only side effect she had was restlessness for about a day. They gave her Compazine to calm her stomach so there was no nausea or vomiting, which was good and her appetite NEVER changed. :-) By Wednesday, she was pretty much back to normal.

We saw the surgeon yesterday. She and the oncologist examined the area and both felt that the tumor had shrunk a little and it had softened. These are all good signs. They want to do one more chemo treatment, which will be done on the 30th, and then the surgeon wants to remove the tumor. She feels Tanny is in better shape than before the first surgery and should be able to handle it well. Our vet concurs with this.

Once again, she's an amazing dog. The cancer diet I've been feeding her from www.naturalcanine.com agrees with her 100%. She's 10-1/2 and is acting like she's 4. Her energy and spirits are very high, she knows she's very loved and she's just a happy girl. Her mommy will be here to take very good care of her and all we can do is hope for the best.

Judy can be contacted on (JBrande254@aol)

Our Afghans Website/Congratulations Ruth on the 36th year of publication
-Updated the OA website, you can preview the January 2003 edition, and also look back at the last five years monthly edition previews.

As we approach 2003, we send our congratulations to Ruth Weddle (OA publisher) on achieving this milestone and we thank Ruth for keeping us so well informed and entertained on all aspects of our breed for the last 35 years. OA is such a deal! Why not subscribe and/or "gift" a friend a years subscription? OA only costs $30 (USA), $37 (Canada and Overseas) for a full years subscription. You can of course also advertise your litters, brags etc at very modest rates. Ruth would be delighted to receive news, views, letters, articles, photo's etc for publication. So.. before you go spend all your money on the new year sales - subscribe to OA and/or gift a subscription to OA to your friends.

Email Ruth Weddle at Our Afghans.

-Guest books/search engine this site. My UK ISP messed up on their servers. They have put the PEDS pages onto a new server but have not got the cgi-bin (program folder) to work yet, so I am sorry but for the time being the guest books will not work and I have temporarily removed the search facilities.

-Picture (below) of our young affie "Sherlock" - Mahimmar In Luv's Grip

Photo taken on the pier at Monteray this week where Sherlock had great fun chasing pigeons and seagulls. Shown only lightly but we are hoping to squeeze some more show time into our schedule and take him to more shows. Many thanks to all friends and co-exhibitors for the friendly comments and encouragement we received during his outing at the Northern California Speciality this weekend. Steve and Maralee.
