COMMON PLANTS IN THE GARDEN MAY BE TOXIC TO PUPPIES
(The following is presumed to likely affect Afghan puppies as well as Saluki's and therefore links from both Saluki and Afghan pages are provided to this note). Thanks to our Saluki friends for posting it.
- In the notes of the Saluki discussion group this week (30/8/96) there was some interesting information sent in by Miss Frances Roseberry from Nr Atlanta Georgia in the USA. The subject was on common plants in the garden that may be toxic to puppies.
- Bearded Iris -- I believe the foliage and especially the root to be toxic.
- Oleander -- I'm given to understand it is deadly.
- Foxglove -- As the former botanical source for digitalis, I understand that it can cause heart failure.
- Anything with thorns -- roses, blackberry, etc. for obvious reasons.
- Yew trees -- all parts of the yew are supposed to be very toxic.
- Aconite -- this used to be grown as a therapeutic herb, but it contains some very dangerous alkaloids and can be deadly.
- Miss Roseberry states that these are the "common ornamentals" and that the garden should be checked for things like Hemlock, deadly nightshade and mistletoe.
I remember visiting Helen Baker (Knightellington) many years ago at Comptonwood and finding her very distressed because a puppy, in her kennel, had eaten a leaf that had fallen into the kennel yard and was gravely ill. There was nothing that could be done to save the puppy and he died later that day. I think it was a yew leaf. In this case the veterinarians couldn't find an antidote. However, having some insight regarding some of the plants which contain poisons may help prevent problems for your curious puppies.
