Santa Cruz Dog Show, July 1936, USA

Earlier this year (2002) I purchased some negatives and copyrights thereto, and they included the photograph above. It's a special interest photograph because 1936 is but a handful of years after the breed was imported into the USA, so the Afghan above may well be one of the early influences in the breed. As ever, an interesting archive like this immediately started me researching to try and identify the Afghan in the photo above.

The background I have to the photograph includes the following "One of a kind original two-frame 35mm negative strip of an Afghan Hound at the Tenth Annual Santa Cruz Dog show, Santa Cruz, California 7-28-1936. Collected by the president of a newsreel company in the 30's. He would keep key shots from the original negatives that were not needed to make the newsreels, before they were destroyed. They were immediately stored in a vault until we purchased the collection last year (and the rights that go with them) These are the original, first generation camera negatives".

The Internet is a wonderful medium, and the speed with which things happen sometimes surprises even this old internet fossil. Well, I emailed David Frei (Stormhill) hoping that he may be able to access AKC archives, and to my great pleasure and, within just a few hours David had provided the following details....

"It was only an entry of five, so I am going to just copy it verbatim right here. The funny thing is that the Afghan that went BOB and Gr 1 was disqualified for violation of Ch 3, Section 12 (which was scribbled in the catalog as 'not registered owner.' maybe the name in the catalog was not the actual owner or something like that).

BOB - Not allowed. (Judge placed (Ch) Kundah of Prides Hill; disqualified, violation of Ch 3, Section 12). MY NOTE: This dog also won the group, which indicates to me that the violation was not discovered until after the group, or perhaps not until after the show was over (but it was marked in the catalog, so probably it happened at the show when someone who didn't win the group raised a protest, if you can imagine such a thing happening at a dog show!)

We note that there are five Afghans mentioned in the above, of which three were imports from the UK. I include some relevent pedigrees below.

The story is not over yet as I still need to identify the Afghan in the photograph, but it can only be onf of the five mentioned above. I had a brief chat with Karen Armistead but havn't had time to do more research. So watch for more info on this in the future. Steve.
