SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 30th OCTOBER 1998

The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club celebrated its 25th birthday in great style at the Championship Show last Saturday. Ian Veal and Brendon Austin had a table decorated to reflect the occasion with Champagne and a cake decorated with the club’s logo. Everyone gathered around during the lunch break to toast the club and hopefully another 25 years. For the dogs, each canine competitor was given a goodie pack to collect after their judging A big thank you to Ian, Brendon and the Committee members for making such a memorable day. In keeping with the birthday celebrations, “The Saluki”, the publication of The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club was available. This edition, was the first produced by its new editor, Mrs Ann Shimmin. The magazine celebrates The Club from 1923 to 1998 with a coloured front and back cover. Inside there are copies of the minutes of the inaugural meeting of the club and signed by Florence Amhurst. Then as a further look into our past, the write-up of the first show which awarded Challenge Certificates to Salukis. The third part looks at the club 25 years ago with a record of Salukis owned by members. There are some interesting features in the magazine i.e. an interview with Mrs Zola Rawson and her Mumtaz Kennel. I congratulate the editor and her committee for a well presented and informative publication If you have not subscribed for 1998, subscriptions are available from, The Treasurer, Mr Don Everton, Woodman Cottage, Cambridge Road, Quendon, Saffron Waldon, Essex CB11 3XQ or Telephone 01799 543383. Tony and Daphne Parnham have faxed us some information regarding the ‘Welfare Stall’ at the Show: “At the Championship Show on Saturday, the Welfare Stall made £225. The Welfare Fund would like to thank all those who generously supported the stall. With the ever increasing number of rescues this is a vital fund raiser. The raffle for the Gail Goodman book was drawn, the winner was Karen Newham who, with her interest in smoothes will find it most interesting. If anyone would like Welfare Christmas Cards, two designs were brought out for this year, please phone Daphne on 01621 772092. Packs of 3 of one design are £1.00 plus 25p package and sting, packs of 12, 6 of each design are £4.00, p & p 50p, orders will be dispatched by return.”
