SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 29 OCTOBER 1999

Ann Shimmin, editor of "The Saluki" the publication of SGHC has asked me to put in the following: "Whilst they say that 'there is many a slip between cup and lip' I have now discovered to my cost that there is also 'many a slip between initial proofing and printing'. A casualty of this printing gremlin is the credit which is due to Dr. John Hudson for the interesting and impeccably researched article 'From the Country of Origin' which appears in the Championship Show 99 Edition of The Saluki. His name was there at one stage - but unfortunately not in the published edition! Whilst John has taken all this in his usual laid back manner I would like readers to be aware that he is the author of 'From the Country of Origin'. "

Regarding the feature in 'Our Dogs' on the Saluki, I received the following letter from Mr Ken Bouden of Exeter: "Reading the Saluki feature in Our Dogs rattled up the old memory and took me back to an Open Show I judged in Sussex many years ago. I am not sure whether it was Brighton or Worthing.

In those days we had really big variety classes and wins were not easy. In one class a lady came in with a beautiful creature that had me fascinated from the start. She was so feminine yet had quarter like carved oak. The head carriage was proud and I felt I was being honoured to meet such a creature. It is not often, when judging that a particular dog has one mesmerised but this one did and she ended up Reserve Best in Show, if my memory is not playing tricks. She was called Burydown Emina and her picture has stayed with me ever since. The owner was very pleased and I later learned from the Secretary that the pair of them had spend the previous evening practising as there was a doubt that the bitch would be willing to show. Also, in the entry was a creamy white creature that came into the Puppy Class and I found her captivating also; although she needed time to mature. I think she was best Puppy. Her name was Burydown Freya. They were so beautiful that I looked for their names in show reports and knew the other judges were no fools in doing what I had done. The interesting thing was that I sort of resented Saluki folk referring again and again to Freya when my dream girl was Emina. There was something akin to the ghostly about Emina as she FLOATED around the ring. Needless to say, I have loved the breed ever since and oft regretting I did not have premises to do them justice. After all, one would never dream of putting a hawk in a birdcags." Thank you Ken for sharing those thoughts.

The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club held their Championship Show last Saturday. As we Were unable to attend, we thank those who have given us the results. Unfortunately we do not know who won Best Puppy or Best Veteran in Show. BIS, DCC (Judge Mrs M. Parker) for first CC for owner and dog was Mr M. McCormick Smith's Mumtaz Star Song . He was born on 18th February, 1996 and his breeder Mrs Z Rawson. His sire is Peblu Priam of Fargaze and Dam Mumtaz Moon Star. RDCC was Mrs P Kendall's Ch Gulzar Al-Mutakabbir. RBIS, BCC (Judge, Mrs J Applebee-Burt) was the newly crowned Ch Sedeki Irada owned by Mr Don Wieden and Mr Frank Farrar. RBCC went to Mrs & Miss Mason's Asayaad Warda Bint Shamsa. Well done all. On the same day as the SGHC Championship Show, was hound day at Driffield Championship Show. Salukis had classes, but without Challenge Certificates. The judge was Mrs Jean Watts. Her BOB was Mr & Mrs D Rogers' Ch Labakan Ikteer Takha with BOS to Mrs D Garratt's Ch Caryna Hera.
