SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

Saluki Breed Notes10/1/97

Last week Helen, myself and three of the Salukis went on a walking holiday in mid-Wales to coincide with the Welsh Kennel Club show on Friday. The first day was rainy so we decided to head for the coast of Wales as the good weather was suppose to be coming from the west. The rain did stop as forecasted and we found a path that led to a beach with no one occupying it, just south of Aberystwyth. This was our Salukis first time at the sea side and they were totally confused by the waves and the water that tasted horrible. Only one of the dogs found the surf enjoyable and decided to dig and play. For meals, we found plenty of pubs with gardens so the dogs were with us at all times. On one of our sojourns we came across the Elan Valley, which is a man made reservoir constructed at the end of the last century as a water source for Birmingham.. Having decided to try one of the walks the going was not easy with steep elevations which continued longer than our legs preferred. As you might guess, the dogs found the walking less of a problem than us but they were delighted when we found a river for them to cool their feet and have a drink. All in all it was a good trip and very managable having the dogs with us, as the hotels and pubs were very accommodating. We would recommend and will indeed try another holiday walking with our Salukis.

The judge elect at The Welsh Kennel Club was Mrs Daphne Tovey, allocating CCs for the first time. The DCC and BOB was Bryce-Smith’s Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic with RDCC awarded to Copperthwaite’s Al Caliphs Imparja. BCC was Williams’ Ch Kasaque Gloriana with RBCC to Hadfield’s Bamjoeh Beguine of Lokhandar. Best Puppy went to Everton’s Ishieya Kalis. Well done all.

I have been given some further information relative to the Pedigree Chum Veteran Stakes. Deborah Copperthwaite advised me that her dog, Ch Windswift Al Caliph was overall winner of the Pedigree Petfoods Veteran Stakes in 1984. Also Ian Veal phoned to let let us know that he will be judging next year at the second Birmingham Show. The list that we were provided last week is not yet complete, as all the judging appointments have not yet been gazetted. As I am informed about additional judges, I will include the appointments in the notes.
