SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 29 JANUARY 1999
Adele Walton Haddon has kindly sent up the following information on Sandy Austin:
SANDY AUSTIN - GINGERBERRY DESIGNS
On the 3rd January the world lost one of its most talented specialist dog jewellers and artist and the Saluki world lost a dear friend. Sandy had fought cancer so bravely for some time and her determination and courage was a lesson to us all. Her husband, Tim, nursed and cared for her through her illness and was her rock. We are all grieving for the loss of someone who had given us all so much in her generosity and talent. Sandy was born in Manchester in 1949 but lived in many parts of the country and at the age of eight moved to Canada for 5 years. She was thrilled to be able to judge Salukis in Canada in 1998 and renewed friendships with people over there, sadly for the last time. She obtained a degree in jewellery and silversmithing. Sandy loved animals and took rescued dogs in whenever she had an inch of spare room - the long suffering Tim wondering what would end up on his bed next! She had her first Saluki in 1974, Abibi Bikila, who decided backflips and somersaults were preferable to showing but success was to come her way in the form of Miskanda Zanthi and her first Champion Altaya Deimus of Gingerberry, whose life was also tragically cut short far too soon. Sandy somehow also found time to obedience train her Border Collies and also awarded C.C.s in the breed.
Having made her first piece of Saluki jewellery for herself the business soon blossomed and she was a regular stall holder at Crufts and her work has been sent around the world. She once told me that her greatest compliment was that it was bought so often by the worlds top judges. Sandy was a founder member of the Northern Saluki Club and awarded C.C.s in the breed in 1995. She will be remembered by everyone in the Saluki world for her outgoing personality, generosity and kindness.
Funeral was at Misterton Parish Church, Nr. Doncaster, Saturday 11am

Time's winged chariot hurrying near"
