SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

Saluki Breed Notes27/3/97

Following the excitement of Crufts and the departure of our visitors from overseas and otherwise I have been asked if I know of anyone that video’d the Saluki judging. Could anyone that has such a video please let me know and I will endeavor to connect you to the right parties.

The following information has been sent to me by the Hon Secretary of The Saluki Welfare fund, Mr Tony Parnham: “At the last meeting of the Welfare Fund, the Treasurer’s report showed a serious drop in funds, due mainly to rescues which had been in kennels for a long time, fortunately one of these, which came in with demodectic mange, is now clear and came to the meeting on it’s way to a new home. The committee would like to hear from anyone who could offer a short term foster home for a rescue, in order to reduce kenneling costs. They would be healthy. Rescues with any health problems would as now, be kenneled or stay with a warden. If anyone could help or would like more information could they please contact Karen (01279 833855) or Denise (01302 710136). To raise funds the committee have had made a limited edition of Saluki mugs. Rosemary Lewis did a sterling job selling these at Crufts, they will be available a Club Shows throughout the year. A gold bracelet, which has been kindly donated, will also be raffled.

The committee also discussed health issues in the Saluki, bearing in mid the recent heart report and the cases of early death. The Welfare Fund will be organizing a seminal later in the year when the main speaker will be Dr Jean Dodds, who will speak on Thyroidism and Auto Immune problems. it was the view of the Welfare Committee that it was important that breeders had as much information as possible before breeding. Welfare will organise blood testing for a full thyroid and Von Willebrands Disease. A batch can be sent to America (a full thyroid profile is not done in the UK), the results coming back confidentially direct from the laboratory to the owner in about a week. Further details from Tony Parnham (01621 772092) Karen or Denise. The Committee would not like to see Salukis suffer from some of the hereditary diseases in other breeds, or be predisposed towards other health problems, sensible action now by breeders, using sound healthy stock and purchasers of puppies insisting on knowing the background of not only the sire and dam but all other related animals, will ensure Salukis stay a healthy breed.”
