Saluki Breed Notes 26/06/97
Your weekly installment of whats on and whats happening in the UK. SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 26TH JUNE 1997
Last year, Helen and I attended Border Union Show and we cooked. It was so hot that no one wanted to move around the ring and the judges all were wearing hats to avoid sun-stroke. This year it was on with the coats and everyone, I am told, was huddling in the tents, trying not to freeze. So much for the British weather. The judge at Border Union was Mrs. J Bullock. BOB and DCC was the Lewis’ Ch Knightellington Xerxes with RDCC going to Beguinette Brother Jakob. BCC, for her second, CC was Hadfield’s Bamjoe Beguine of Lokhandar RBCC was Shellard’s Ch Seafleet Timpani. Congratulation to Mrs. Anne McDonald on winning the Pedigree Petfoods Special Championship Stakes. It will be nice to see a Saluki competing in the annual competition sponsored by Pedigree Petfoods as I cannot remember the last time one did.
I have heard the Michael Wood has been unwell and been in the hospital. I am sure he would appreciate cards. His address is Training Farm, Swinford Mill Lane, Broomhill, Barrow, Chester, CH3 7LA.
The following information has been sent to me from Dr John Hudson, PRO of the SGHC. “ Once again the sun shone on us at the Open Show. This was our second Show at Bisley and now that most people are getting used to finding the way (apart from the Secretary who fetched up in Brighton by mistake) there were few complaints and many satisfied customers thanks to our two judges, Trevor McCrory and Jenny Startup as well as our referee Carole Read. As last year, there was a fair bit of shooting going on in the background and one or two dogs appeared to be spooked by it. (The venues for our shows have to be fixed a very long time in advance and so if anyone has comments to make, either for or against, send them to the Secretary now.) The raffle made £85.00 and the photography competition £74.00, both very good totals. The picnic took £28.00 from people who joined in the picnic but were unable to provide anything. So, many thanks to all those who provided food, which was excellent and included three grades of cucumber, yoghurt and garlic salad varying from one to ten on the Richter scale, and especially to Daphne and Nick Tovey who seemed to be busy all day organizing and supervising and in the end clearing up. I have not yet heard how much was raised for the Sudden Death fund from the raffle of a lovely cake and I guess Karen Fisher took a break from selling raffle tickets to organize the parade of rescues. Sale of sweatshirts, postcards and so forth from the Secretary’s table were fairly brisk but I am afraid I do not have any details. Many thanks to all who came and contributed so much to the day and to the club. “
Marie Bryce-Smith has requested help from anyone that thinks they may have had a puppy suffering from Black hair follicular dysplasia. Christopher Lewis wrote an article about this problem in Veterinary Matters in Crufts Issue of “The Saluki” 1996. This problem is usually seen as an unusual coat and occurs in black Salukis. If anyone has ever had a case, even though the puppy in question, may have been culled, please contact Marie on telephone number 01342 327573. Marie is trying to put information together on a research project and any contact will be in strict confidence.
