SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 26TH MAY 2000
Ann Shimmin has asked me to include the following:
"Could you be good enough to advise people of my new email address in your Saluki Notes. It is anncranstal@manx.net. Many thanks for your assistance. My old email address is featured in the Crufts Edition of The Saluki, so no doubt it will cause all sorts of problems during the next two months."
Reading Zola Rawson's critique for Salukis at Birmingham National in last weeks 'Our Dogs', she commented that she found three bitches in one class with a poor mouth. This prompted a discussion with Helen and myself on priorities, when assessing a dog. The obvious preference would be for the dog, not to have any serious faults and hopefully there will be more choice when judging so, neither of the given scenarios would be considered. For this case we have a dog with a level bite or undershot mouth and another dog with a very weak front and poor action. In The Kennel Club Standard for Salukis it is specifically stated that: " mouth: Teeth and jaws strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissors, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws." The Standard also mentions: "gate/movement: and describe it as Smooth, flowing and effortless. Light and lifting, showing both reach and drive without hackney or pounding." This begs the question where does the priority lie when assessing an animal which, uses he movement and his jaw for catching his prey."Michael Williams (101547.503@compuserve.com)
