SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 25th September, 1998
Futher to my notes of August 21st and the question of testing for von Willebrand's disease in Salukis. Dr John Hudson has sent me the following comments.
“The reasons for testing, I believe, are as follows:
1. There have been instances of deaths of Salukis associated, and presumably caused by, uncontrolled bleeding. It is absolutely essential that the Saluki fraternity should find out, if possible, if this has been due to an inheritable defect so that breeders can work to eliminate it.
2. One disease which can cause uncontrolled bleeding, which is known to occur in other breeds and for which a clear test is available, is von Willebrand's disease. It is clearly important that, at the very least, some sample testing is done to see if the disease is there, just as we have done in the past in testing eyes and hips.
3. Early tests appear to show that a significant fraction of Salukis are "at risk". It follows that anyone who intends to breed from stock in any way related to a dog which has shown any inclination to bleed unduly should test the proposed sire and dam. Others will want to test just to be safe.
I hope we will be kept up to date with the health of tested dogs, especially those in the "at risk" category, so that we can improve our perception of the magnitude of this 'risk'.John has informed me that, sadly, they have had to put Ch Lusaki Pericles of Glenoak to sleep, to save him from further suffering. He had a collapsed larynx at the age of 14 1/2 His sire was Lusaki Commodore of Tirzah and dam Lusaki Kharina. He was born on 5th March 1984 and his breeder was Joan Davies. His first CC , with BOB was awarded by Mrs A Walton- Haddon at Windsor, 1986,. His Second CC, also with BOB, was awarded Mrs J. Wilson-Stringer at Bournemouth, 1987 and his third CC, was given by Mrs Z Rawson at theWelsh Kennel Club 1987. The previous week, the Hudsons lost Glenoak Bharandi.
Doreen and Eric Stansfield have had to say good-by to their Ch Ashieya Asiil. He was born on 13th April 1986. His Sire was Mumtaz Saki of Telika and his dam Ishieya Sharhazad. He was bred by his owners. Asiil won his first CC at Manchester 1993,judge Mr T Thorn. His second CC at Windsor 1993, judge Mrs V Stringer and his third CC at Midland Counties 1993, judge Mr D Simpson.
Richmond Championship Dog Show was held at Ascot Racecourse last Sunday. The racecourse is always seems colder than its surrounds but fortunately for us we remained dry most of the day with sunshine, although I did notice that Helen kept her gloves on for most of the day. Our judge was awarding Challenge Certificates for the first time in the UK. Mrs U Lennartz is very well known in her native Germany for her Salukis. Her BOB for her third CC was Mrs R. Lewis’ Knightellington Zafa. She was born on 28th May, 1995 and bred by her exhibitor. Her sire is Ch Asayaad Yimkin from Knightellington and her dam is Ch Knightellington Xquisite. RBCC was awarded to Mrs D Copperthwaite’s Ch Al Caliphs Surayya. DCC was Miss D. Duckenfield’s Ch Pennyworth Kassim with RDCC to Mrs D Copperthwaite’s Al Caliphs Surya. Best puppy was Mrs R. Redfern’s Kasaque Ibis of Sabaka. Well Done All!
