The Reading and District Kennel Association is having their Open Show on Saturday,15th March, 1997. The judge for Salukis and Afghans will be Mrs Cloris Costigan. Cloris has sent us the following information about herself: She states that she has been involved with dogs most of her life, showing since 1971 when she acquired her first Afghan. She exhibited them for several years. In 1972 she got her first Salukis. She states:- " Four of my five children shared the joys of showing the dogs when we started. I was simply the kennel help and financed all their efforts. Now it is only myself at home with all my Salukis, who are my constant companions and travelling partners. They range in ages from 13.5 years to 3 years old. Each one of them allows me the privilege of sometimes outsmarting them, They have taught me much and for that I am grateful. They have also helped me make many long time friends, both in the USA and abroad, all through our common interest." She continues to say she is now retired and gives much of her time to Salukis, Saluki rescue, breeders referral and to club work. She has been a long time member of Saluki Club of America, New Brunswick Kennel Club and a founding member of the Garden State Saluki Club. She has served these clubs in many areas, as President, Vice President, Treasurer and Board member as well as Chairperson and Newsletter Editor. Cloris coordinates Saluki Rescue throughout the USA, which she says has been very challenging "It has taught me to put the dogs welfare first and foremost and has taught me not to be judgemental in the rescue efforts" Schedules are available through the secretary, Mr Graham Osborne on telephone number 01734 585966 or writing to 3 Heron Way, Reading, Berks RG1 6DY.
On a special report on BBC Television this evening they were warning about using a particular flea treatment that was proving fatal to dogs and cats. I believe the drug was one that is applied directly to the coat causing fleas to die all over the dog. If you have some packets left over from last summer I suggest you telephone your vet before using it to make sure it is not the drug that has proven to be lethal to about 14 dogs to date.
Not too long ago Dr.Jean Dodds, a veterinarian from the U.S.A., visited the U.K. where she presented to different groups on health issues. I believe that she has particular knowledge about canine immune systems and thyroid conditions. Several people concerned about problems that have occurred in Salukis, where the immune system is thought to have failed, are organising to have blood samples taken by their vets and these are being forwarded to Dr.Dodds in America where thyroid conditions are being evaluated. I will attempt to obtain more details regarding this programme but in the mean time should you wish to participate more information can be obtained from Tony and Daphne Parnham or Karen Fisher.
