A couple of weeks ago I mentioned videoing the shows and last week I included the comments by Roger Shellard why we should video our shows. This week I include another opinion in favour of videos from Mrs Elaine Rushton: “I felt I had to respond to the questions raised in your breed notes regarding the videoing of Salukis at shows. I must admit that I was quite surprised to learn that members at the SGHC AGM decided they did not want the use of video cameras at club shows. As you know, I have not been in the breed very long and maybe I am being a little naive, but I would have thought that most people show their salukis because they take pride in them as being good representatives of the breed, worthy of being displayed to a wider audience. When we choose to exhibit our hounds we are inviting critical appraisal within a public forum, for we may be sure that it is not just the judge who will be formulating an opinion! What, then, is the specific danger that lurks within the video camera? What does it see that the ringside spectators cannot? Are those that object worried about unscrupulous editing? Or just afraid that their hound may not have performed as well as usual on the day and may be "forever damned" on video tape? I would be interested to know what the objections were based on. From a personal point of view, as someone who looks on exhibiting primarily as an enjoyable passtime and not a matter of life and death, I have no qualms about my Saluki being immortalised on tape, and have already expressed my interest in buying a copy of the NSC video.”

Last Saturday (9th May) The National at Birmingham held their Championship Show. The judge was Mrs Deborah Copperthwaite. Her BOB, BCC and later pulled out in the last seven in the Hound Group was Mrs R Lewis’ Knightellington Zafa. She was born on 28th May, 1995 and bred by her exhibitor. Her sire is Ch Asayaad Yimkin from Knightellington and dam, Ch Knightellington Xquisite. RBCC was Mr A Rawson’s Mumtaz Star Maker. DCC was Mrs M Bryce-Smith’s Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic and RDCC was Ms J Webbs Ch Cottonore Dameris. Best Puppy was Mrs J Davies Lusaki Rah Rrashaba NAF. Later in the day, Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic placed 3rd in the Championship Stakes.

El Hamrah Mehrab-Khalifa, owned by Helen, Rosemary Redfern and myself has now accumulated enough points for his Junior Warrant. Please advise me if you also have something to tell the world about. Your breed column can be a useful medium.

As a final note for this week, Mavis and Roger Shellard are off to Kentucky to judge the very famous Saluki Club of America Specialty known as the Egypian Event. Mavis will have her work cut out with about 400 Saluki to judge over about four days. We wish Roger and Mavis a wonderful trip and hope they will return with lots of information to share in these notes.
