SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 21 August 1998

For a change at Bournemouth Canine Association’s Championship Show we had hot weather. After a summer of 19 or 20 degrees, both dogs and people found it difficult to cope with 30 degree weather. For those using Fahrenheit that represents an increase from 65 degrees to 90 degrees, give a degree or two either way. Fortunately our judge for the day was Mrs Linda Scanlon from Massachusetts, USA and she is used to that sort of weather. Hence Mrs Scanlon proceeded to judge at a good rate so that the dogs did not have to be out too long in the extreme temperature. BOB, DCC, for his first was awarded to Miss L Goss’ Ezyashchni George. He was born on 8th of August,1993 and the breeder is his owner. His sire is Ch Pennyworth Kassim and dam Shamal Manush. RDCC went to Mrs M Bryce-Smith’s Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic. BCC, for her second CC was won by Mrs K Perkins’ Ermcote Ilex with Pennyworth. RBCC was awarded to Mrs C & Miss V Mason’s Asayaad Warda Bint Shamsa. Best puppy was Mr I Hodgson and Mrs J Faith’s Lusaki Nizam of Khonistan. Congratulations to all of you.

Recently I have heard about or been included in further dialogue regarding the comments made by the Secretary of the Welfare Committee about testing for von Willebrands disease. Rather than discussing the pros and cons of testing or the necessity of testing when no case of this disease has been, as far as I know, diagnosed, in Salukis, the discussion has been about whether the purveyor of the notes (i.e. moi) should have actually put the information in the Saluki column. My belief is that the former part is worth debate and I would welcome individual or collective opinion on the subject. The latter part is purely the domain of the Our Dogs editorial staff and myself. My intention is to put into this column anything that is of interest to Saluki followers and all discerning dog lovers whose eyes find their way on to this space. It is then up to you to agree or disagree, preferably by writing that opinion and sending that to me or to Our Dogs. The only limitation I personally would put upon any opinion is that it clearly avoids any damaging statement towards any dog, owner or group and it is devoid of anything which could be considered in any way libellous.
