SALUKI NOTES: WEEK ENDING 20th March 1998
CRUFTS 1998 is now history. By all accounts I was informed that the Show lived up to its name. The availability of items at the trade stands is quite incredible. Helen returned from the show with everything from fleecy dog beds to vacume cleaner bags. The Discovery Dog display, for Salukis, was beautifully put together with illustrations of Salukis and some information on their history. Many of the visitors to Discovery Dogs on Friday took the time to read them and admired our elegant presentation that reflected the status of a Saluki.
Mrs Ann Macdonald had the honour of judging Crufts 1998. She chose as her BCC and BOB Winner Mr & Mrs Stanmore’s Ch Altaya Jaida-Maria. The RBCC went to Mr & Mrs Hadfield’s Ch Bamjoeh Beguine of Lokhandar. DCC, for the second year running was Mrs Kendall’s Ch Gulzar Al-Mutakabbir with the RDCC to Miss Duckenfield’s Ch Pennyworth Kassim. Best puppy was Mrs & Miss Casemore’s Alaziz Benjamin.
It is AGM season and the Northern Saluki Club will have held their AGM by the time you read these notes. In our package from the Northern Saluki Club we received a copy of their year book. Beryl Payne has, yet again, put together an informative yearbook with all the class placements at Championship Shows for 1997. Also a list of the CC winners and a judging list for 1998. Helen Graham wrote, in the NSC Newsletter, a very interesting article on one of her trips to Crufts (when it was held at Earl’s Court) by coach. (ed. No matter how one travels to Crufts, the day is very stressful.). Also Helen wrote a short account of her favourite Salukis. Further in my information from the NSC was a list of the judges ballot for their 1998 Open Show which was won by Mr D Barratt. The 1999 Championship Show Ballot was won by Mr D. Graham. The Committee and Officers of the NSC remain unchanged. The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club AGM will be held on Saturday, 21st March, 1998 at The Holiday Inn, Garden Court, A1, Sandy, Beds.
One of the visitors to this years Crufts, from overseas, came to our home to exchange information and relax, following the excertions of the day. One topic which we discussed was the choice of judges from overseas into this country. It seems that there is some dialogue in the U.S.A. about the inequity between the number of European judges given appointments in the United States against the number of Americans brought here to judge. Of course we mentioned that S.E. Hound had consistently sourced their judges from many places with the U.S.A. being well represented. However the perception is that many show societys do not consider American judges. This is not an issue causing animosity but something that could be discussed and resolved very easily. The issue of judging lists and fees would need to be considered and to my mind the easiest way of communicating would be via the breed club secretariat. Information could also be transmitted through the various magazines and newsletters advising of the criteria for entering the clubs’ judging lists. I feel sure that there are various views on this situation which could be aired through the different media, not least of all, this column.
