SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 18 JULY, 1998
On Sunday, the 5th of July, in beautifully sunny weather, Windsor held their General Championship Show. The Salukis were in an ideal location under an opensided tent so everyone sat around the ringside with their dogs. Helen and I kept our dogs on their benches until post graduate bitch and open bitch. Except for one other person, we were the only one on the benches. While I was out taking Gloriana to the ringside, someone walked into the benches and took Glory and Rena’s collars. They unsnapped the collars from the leads. I guess the good part was that the dogs were not in their collars at the time and therefore the dogs were not taken; still it is very sad when you return to find items missing. It leaves one believing that nothing, including ones dogs, is safe in this situation. Glory’s collar was black with two brass plates cut out to form hawks. The other collar was dark brown with braiding on the back. If anyone sees either collar I would appreciate them letting me know. The collar with the brass plates is probably irreplaceable. Returning the Show itself, the judge on the day was Mr. Owen Davies. His choice for BOB,BCC was Stanmore’s Ch Altaya Jaida-Maria with RBCC going to Sinclair-Martin & Smart’s Gulzar Aahil of Merimdah. DCC, for his first CC was Wieden & Farrar’s Sedeki Darr-Darr. He was born on 20th July 1990. His sire is Multi Ch Sedeki Mazuri Azefer Bazu and his dam Sedeki Montebello Zerfa. He was bred by his owners. RDCC was Robert’s Beguinette Brother Jakob. Best puppy was Goodby’s Wahiba Emma.
The following information is from Mavis Shellard regarding her recent judging in Kentucky: ‘493 Salukis were entered at Lexington Kentucky for the Saluki Club of America`s National Specialty on June11th, 12th,and13th. On the first day the weather was hot and I judged one hundred and sixty dogs.My Winners Dog was the Open class winner, a black and silver, JEN ARABY FAROUK, owned by W & M Jenson and P Ortez. On Saturday a wind sprung up but it was still hot. My Winners Bitch was a black and white parti colour, KYZYL KUM OMAILLE from the Bred by Exhibitor class and owned by Mr and Mrs Duggan. Sunday brought severe storm warnings and heavy showers for the Best of Breed class with one hundred and eleven entries most of which were Champions and all of extremely high quality. After cutting and recutting them I was left with eleven magnificent Salukis, two of which were my Winners dog and bitch. Winners dog eventually went Best in Show with the Winners bitch taking Best Opposite Sex. Best Puppy was a dark red bitch of only seven months, SKY BORN RADIANCE owned by Lorraine Lilley. It was a great honour to be invited to judge this show but a mammoth task especially the Best of Breed class with such top quality Salukis from all over America and Canada presented in the ring at the same time. I was enthralled to see and examine so many beautiful specimens, and must compliment the American Saluki Breeders on the quality in depth at this show.’
