SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 18 JUNE 1999

The new Health Committee, which is being set-up to work on health issues and education, now has its two representative from the NSC. They are Denise Rogers and Helen Graham who will be joining Karen Fisher and Mary Parker. As soon as I am informed who the veterinary advisor will be I will pass it on. Also, hopefully we will receive, in due time, a mission statement.

Two week ago in my notes I wrote the following: Consistency seems to be the flavour of the day with The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club. "At their Limited Show, which was held in February, the final decision for Best in Show Rested with the referee. In the Saluki Club Yearbook I observe this same person is again the Referee at the Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club Championship Show in October. The SGHC has three shows a year and the Northern Saluki Club has two. As we have only two clubs, we therefore have very few club shows. To have the same person with the responsibility for making the final decisions at 2/3 of 1999 shows is not reasonable. There must be someone else, with the qualifications, that would be acceptable to the Committee, without giving one person so much control over ultimate outcome of our Club show. Any comments?"

In response Mrs Kay Perkins has written the following letter: "I would like to make a factual comment. In the ballot (held in 1998) for the Limited Show 1999 judges, of all nomination papers received only two nominated candidates accepted to go on the ballot. (I don't know how many nominations were received. So obviously the Club needed a judge to officiate as Referee. The Committee took the decision they would nominate someone. In view of the massive restructuring of the judges lists that were to come into force in January, 1999 it was thought best to have a "CC"judge. Time passed by and by the Champ Show (Oct 1998) no one had come up with a nomination for referee. I, as show manager had to have a referee as the "copy" for the Limited Show had to go to print. People are full of good intentions but it then gets forgotten about. So I asked the committee if they would accept the "said person" as she would be there working on the day and she didn't have any judging appointments coming up. One person said they would get back to me with another Judge, they never did!

Regarding the Champ show 1999, the said person was a nominated candidate on the ballot paper and came 4th in order of votes. When 3rd on the ballot does not wish to take up the task as Referee the secretary goes down the list, until fingers crossed, someone does. You may not be aware, but there are quite a few judges who turn down the job of Referee for various reason and there's nothing the Committee can do about it, its their choice.

As a personal comment, we have a ballot, the person on the ballot form comes first in priority, and if it happens to be the same person for more than one year, SO BE IT. In your opinion it may not be "reasonable" but its democratic and using your words the person who has "so much control over the ultimate outcome of our Club Shows" has nothing to do with the Committee. I admire the person for taking it on time after time when other choose not to"

Any comments?

Last Saturday in gale force winds The Scottish Kennel Club held their Championship Show. The judge for Salukis was Mrs Reina Clark. She chose for her BOB, BCC, Mr A Rawson's Mumtaz Star Maker for her second CC. The RBCC went to Mr & Mrs PA Gorton's Al Caliph Sulabha. The DCC, also for his second CC was, Mr C.M & Mrs H.V Williams and Mrs R. Redfern's El Hamrah Mehrab Khalifa (IMP). Best Puppy was Mr A Rawson's Mumtaz Desdemona. Star Maker was later pulled out in the last eight in the group. Well done all..
