SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 17TH MARCH. 2000.

Don Wieden (Sedeki) has sent us the following letter to be included in these notes: "Although I resigned from The Saluki Or Gazelle Hound Club over the passing of the five year membership rule, which was made shortly after my return to Great Britain, I still have access to club news and have just seen the 1999 Yearbook.

Under the Trophy Winners section is the name of each trophy, the category for which it is presented and the winner. I noted that if you chose not to take the trophy it was stated "Not Claimed" which is fair enough. However, the owners' names and Salukis were left out. Why? Not taking home a trophy is ones choice, in this democracy but for club records and posterity, shouldn't the winners be recognised?

So, remember readers, it appears you either take your trophy home or the penalty is no award recognition. In other words... you don't claim it, ya ain't won it, according to the Yearbook and Committee.

Just for the record and not Yearbook posterity, the following trophies were won by Champion Sedeki Irada bred by Frank Farrar and myself at the 1999 S.G.H.C. Championship Show. Ch. Alexandra of Daxlore Trophy, Best Opposite Sex; Michael Lyne Painting, Best Saluki Bred by Exhibitor; Springbarn Simona Trophy, Best Red bitch. Sedeki La Teef bred by us won the Ch. Amena Crown Prince Trophy, Best Puppy Dog Bred By Exhibitor and the Garve Trophy for Best Parti-colour Dog.

The other "Not Claimed" trophy was the Khamora Trophy for the Best Post Graduate Dog won by Mr. and Mrs. Everton and D. Gower, Ishieya Karam."

Don also informed us of the passing of Mrs Esther Bliss Knapp at nearly 96 years. Mrs Knapp's prefix was Pine Paddocks and she registered her first litter with offspring in 1941. Her last litter was in 1975. The foundation of her stock was Mazuri and el Saraje. Carol Ann Lanz wrote in The Saluki Club of America 1986 Yearbook about Mrs Knapp: "has spent nearly five decades breeding, training and writing about the very best in Salukis, her Pine Paddocks Kennels reflecting nearly every bloodline in England and the European continent." The article goes on to say "One of her greatest contributions to the breed was in 1945 when she purchased the imported Abdul Farouk, cropped-eared black and tan dog, bred by King Ibn Saud of Jedda and his selected mate, the smooth Lady Yeled Sarona Ramullah. This pair had been presented to British Field Marshall Sir Henry Maitland Wilson and had been traveling with the Officer until he was about to return to England. He was in the U.S. at the time and rather than subject the dogs to the rigors of a six-month quarantine, he sold them to Mrs Knapp. This could not have happened at a more opportune moment because at that time our Salukis were becoming rather inbred; an infusion of new blood was necessary and welcome. Because of this real need for new strains, Mrs Knapp was able to convince the American Kennel Club that these dogs or their progeny, should be granted registration numbers. In a special ruling by the AKC's Board of Directors, it was arranged that the third generation removed from either could be registered, providing the generations between were always bred to registered stock. The impact of Ch Abdul Farouk was immediately apparent and his high head carriage, long beautiful neck and correct type are recognizable several generations down the line."

We have spoken to Ken Allan for an update on Paul Mahon. Paul is in San Diego Calif. for an operation. It was an extremely complicated operation, Ken said, The surgeons had to cool his blood, take his heart and lungs out of the body, remove The blood clots that had accumulated and then put it back into the body. The surgeons in this hospital, are pioneers in this particular surgery. Ken also said that Paul is doing well and they hope to have him out of intensive care in the next day or two. When Paul was brought around from his surgery, the hospital staff had arranged a banner at his bedside announcing that Schizandra, his Saluki, had produced a litter of 9 puppies. We hope all continues to go well for Joanne and Paul.
