SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 16th February 2001

Ian Stedman-Brown, PRO for the SGHC has asked me to relate the following points.

Brendan Austin and Ian Veal will be providing their usual excellent food at The SGHC Limited Show on Sunday 18 February. The location is Burnwell Village hall, nr Oundle, Northants. For further information please ring the Show Manager, Nicola Quadling on 0208590 8457.

The Committee of the SGHC is short handed and if you would like to join or be co-opted for the coming year, please let the Secretary know. Finally, the Saluki Magazine has a good chance of folding unless it finds a new editor and treasurer. The job description for both of these jobs can be obtained, once again from the Secretary, Dr John Hudson on telephone 01954 203084.

In these notes a few weeks ago, we discussed the pros and cons of obtaining a Saluki from a breeder vs rescue. Karen Fisher, who was the Rescue Officer for the SGHC for 8 years has sent us the following comments: “Dogs end up in rescue for various reasons (and there are many) and very often it is not the fault of the dog at all. People take on rescues because they want to give these dogs a second chance. I found during my time in rescue that nearly all of the people who applied for one would not dream of taking one from a breeder at all. If they would take one from a breeder they wanted an older one not a puppy. Sometimes people would enquire about puppies and when they found out how much money was involved could not afford that for a pet (which is what they were looking for) and so would then think about a rescue and be put in touch with the rescue. Some people favoured taking one as young as possible (but out of puppyhood) because they didn't want to go through the "puppy stage" and others would only consider taking on an old dog to give it a comfortable life for it's few remaining years. If I ever got enquiries for a puppy I would direct them to the Secretary of the Club who could put them in touch with breeders who had puppies for sale. “ Any other comments about this article?
