SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 15TH OCTOBER 1999
Michael McCormick-Smith, Hon. Sec of The Saluki Welfare Fund has sent me the following communication: "Firstly, we were very sorry to hear of the resignation of the two Rescue Wardens. Denise Rogers is giving up at the end of 1999 and we are fortunate that Karen Fisher has been persuaded to continue until December 2000( although she would like to give up sooner if a suitable replacement can be found before then).
It has not so far been possible to find anywhere to install the therapeutic swimming pool donated by Mrs Noel-Brooks. It needs either to be sunk into the ground or to have its sides banked up with earth. If anyone who lives in a reasonably accessible part of the country and would be willing to erect it and to make use available to Saluki owners (and perhaps others) at a modest fee to be shared between that person and the Welfare, the Committee would be pleased to discuss it further (Secretary is Mr M McCormick-Smith on tel 01305 824117)
The number of Saluki needing new homes seems to get larger every year. The level of vet's fees is giving rise to concern, especially now that the coursing season has started and dogs with broken legs are coming into rescue. Some new owners are generously willing to take on the expense and aftercare of these dogs, but this cannot be relied on in every case. Watch out for Jenny Ziman over the next few months in the TV series Pet Rescue"
Karen Fisher, The Welfare Officer has asked for us to include the following in the notes Rescued Salukis that are looking for homes: 1. A black & Tan male of about 15 months. Only homes with older children will be considered as he has had a very bad experience in the past. 2. Black & Tan of 18 months who will need an experience owner as he has had no formal training (but this is in hand) 3. A Black & Silver male of about 5 years. 4. A 2 year old bitch. 5. A red and white parti bitch of about 3 years. 6. A black & silver bitch of about 3 years. 7. A black & tan dog of about 3 years. 8. A red dog of about 13 months whos is still recovering from an operation. Although we have a waiting list everyone of it has a cat and none of these are good with cats. If you could make room on the sofa for another one please ring either Denise Rogers on 01302 771143 or Karen Fisher on 01279 833855"
The Saluki Health Committee ( formed by The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club The Northern Saluki Club and The Saluki Welfare Fund) have sen the following: "Testing for Hypothyroidism From 1st September 1999 Proceed Animal Welfare Ltd (P.A.W.) are offering a screening scheme for Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland). The test is in a kit form and costs £23.50. Copies of the pamphlet produced by P.A.W. together with order forms will be available at the SGHC Championship Show from Karen Fisher. Breed Health Survey The health Survey has now been drawn up and a copy sent to the Kennel Club's KC/BSAVA Coordinator has kindly obtained the assistance of mr James Wood, the Eqidemiologist at the Animal Health Trust to analyse the data collected. The survey is being copied now and will be circulated as soon as possible."
