SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 15TH MAY, 1998
Tony Parnham has sent me the following information on behalf of The Saluki Welfare fund: “Welfare would like to thank all those who so kindly donated to and spent their money at the welfare stall at the Northern Ch. Show. We made a magnificent sum of £150.00. At it’s recent meeting saluki health was discussed and in the light of the levels of hypothyroidism and Von Willebrands disease reported in the last newsletter and the report of Dr. Brownlie on Saluki hearts, the Welfare Committee urge anyone considering breeding a litter to test both the sire and dam before the mating. Although the reports were based on blood samples sent to America for testing, these test can be carried out at the Animal Health Trust were recent test results support the earlier findings. Without due care and attention the breed could quickly be in trouble. The committee wondered if the puppy levy was still operating, it was also suggested that stud dog owners might like to pay 10% of the stud fee to welfare? For its part Welfare are making arrangements for a seminar in November, probably at the Royal Vet College with speakers on Health and Nutrition.”
Personally I would like to say that to my knowledge there have not been any confirmed cases of Von Willebrands Disease, in UK Salukis; however precaution is always a sensible action to take.
A couple of weeks ago I discussed the use of the video camera at shows. Thank you to everyone that took time to share their point of view: Roger Shellard sent me the following: “As all dog shows are open to the public I have always taken the view that outside of the ring cameras are usually welcome [with the exception of flash]. As the person who was filming at NSC I had the permission of the club and I made a point of asking the judge for her consent as a matter of courtesy. Both were given freely. Not one person expressed any concern at the camera or the fact that I was filming and only one saluki even bothered to look at the camera and I swear blind it smiled. My reason for filming was firstly to provide me with material to study as I cannot get to many shows these days, some copies will be going to Australia and New Zealand and possibly to Europe. I have film of Salukis in various countries soon to be expanded and it will be a lovely collection to look back on when my bones will no longer move quick enough to own a saluki. The one comment in your notes that really worries me though is the phrase "used against you later" Used for what? I fail to see how a video of a dog show can be used for anything unless there is evidence of someone there with their lover instead of spouse. This phrase of yours has a terrible hint of PARANOIA to me after all its only a dog show we are talking about here, what the hell are people worried about. Is it fair to say therefore that any overseas visitor to a SGHC show may NOT take any video to take back home with them.”
Next week I will continue this discussion with more comments regarding videos at dog shows. I am truly delighted with the input, thank you.
