SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES: WEEK ENDING13 March 1998

Well, by the time you have read these notes, Crufts will be over and we can all start again qualifying our dogs for Crufts 1999, the judge elect is Mrs Beryl Payne. I hope everyone had a enjoyable day. The results can be read elsewhere in this paper.

The Scottish Hound Association held its Championship Show last Saturday with the weather man threatening blizzard and heavy winds. I am told, by some of those that made the trek to Scotland from England that the day was draped in beautiful sunshine and the snow did not materialize except further to the north.

Mr Espen Engh of Norway was the judge and I believe this was his first time judging Salukis in the UK, however, if I have made a mistake regarding this, I am sure someone will let me know. His BOB for her first CC was Perkins’ smooth, Ermcote Ilex With Pennyworth. She was born on 21st January, 1997 and her breeder is Mrs Reynolds. Her sire is Pennyworth Kestrel and her dam Nadno Mole at Ermcote. RBCC went to Rawson’s Mumtaz Star Maker. DCC was Bryce-Smith’s Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic and RDCC was Hodgson & Faith’s Lusaki Ll’Omar of Khonistan . There were no puppies entered. Well done all.

I must congratulate the Swedish on their proactive roll regarding the change in the Saluki Standard as proposed by the FCI. Please find below further information regarding Sweden’s attempt to retain an acceptable Standard as sent to us by Mr Per Nordahl, who is acting as a coordinator for the Swedish Saluki Club,

“I must now take the chance to inform you what we are doing to widen the discussion of the FCI-standard problem. (I have just joined the E-Mail and my address is nordahl@algonet.se and I will create a home-page later). At the end of March The Swedish Saluki Club will organize a two days seminar on the subject of the Saluki standard. Between forty and fifty people are coming and we hope to open the eyes of those who do not see the problem with the new FCI Standard. From this meeting we hope to be able to report interesting ideas. I have received many answers to our first letter from all over the world. We will keep to a 2 steps plan before writing our suggestion to The Swedish Kennel Club (to be given to FCI): (1). get a wide debate on the standard and push other SalukiClubs/ Organisations to come into the debate (2). later on to collect the ideas into an international symposium to hopefully find a new FCI standard where all Saluki fanciers could agree.
