SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 12TH FEB 1999

Mrs Karen Fisher has sent in some information regarding a health seminar and some of her opinions on health issues: "Although still in the early stages, a date has been fixed for the Seminar that Denise and I are organising on behalf of the Welfare fund, it is to be 26th March 2000. At the present time the speakers are Dr W Jean Dodds on "Immune Mediated Diseases", Dr Kathy Freeman (Animal Health Trust) on "Working with Your Vet and the laboratory, "What kinds of Tests are Available" and Dr J Sampson (Animal Health Trust) who has kindly agreed to cover health problems and DNA Testing. I am still working on the venue as there is a lot of interest from outside our breed (there is already quite a long list for tickets!) Hopefully people from our breed will come along and be enlightened, as I was, when I heard Jean speak, when she was last in the UK. It has made me realise that if I want to breed better, healthier dogs for the future, testing is a must. Particularly now that it has been found from the testing, up to November 97, that included 65 dogs, 23% (15 dogs) had low thyroid profiles and of the 49 tested for VWD 22% (11 dogs) had VWD antigen levels of below 50% and were classifies as carriers of the disease. I don't know why people are so anti these tests in the light of these results- as I keep pointing out to people if they get a low result it doesn't mean that they can't breed just that they must use clear mates and test their resulting litter. People I know in Dobermans who have von Willebrand carriers and been careful with their breeding and used clear stock have ended up with clear to clear mating producing large healthy litters- what's wrong with that? As Denise has said time and again, von Willibrands is only one blood problem we have within the breed and we must keep in mind the others. And she's right- surely if we can eradicate von Willebrands, it is one less to worry about and we can concentrate on the others"

Maria Niedzwiedz of Southeast Afghan Racing has asked me to inform you that Stonegate Track has now been closed. She will let us know when and where the racing will resume.

Mr Tony Parnham has sent me the following regarding Saluki Welfare AGM: "A well attended meeting took place on Sunday 24th January, at which the following committee were elected. Jenny Ziman (Chairman), David Graham (Treasurer), Helen Graham (Vice Chairman), Michael McCormick-Smith (Secretary), Denise Rogers and Karen Fisher (Wardens, Ann Jones, Ian Veal, Ian Roagers and Daphne Parnham (Committee members). David Graham reported that finances were sound at the moment but in welfare you never know what is round the corner, there had been some awful cases of rescues with mange and a number with broken legs but these had been satifactorily dealt with, thanks to a lot of loving card. In 1997, 22 salukis were re-homed and in 1998 there were 31 re-homing. The issue of rehoming of Saluki crosses was raised, it was pointed out that many request for rescue were refused on these grounds but where there was some doubt, decisions were made by the wardens in the best interest of the dog, at that time. It was pointed out that Saluki crosses only came about because someone with a pure bred Saluki had at some time allowed it to be used.
