Saluki Gazelle Hound Database and Breed Information ExchangeSALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES
Saluki Breed Notes11/10/96
The following information comes from John Hudson, The Saluki or Gazelle Hound Clubs PRO "Now that Discover Dogs seems set to become a regular event, twice a year, it is time that we had a properly designed booth which will reflect the character and origins of the Saluki in some style. So, will somebody with talent for interior design - the interior in question being a 3 metre square booth with a dog bench in one corner - please step forward. Or be volunteered by a friend (the Secretary's number is 01234 708658). Some of the Breed booths are decorated really well and it would be a shame to be left behind. The Committee has agreed to spend real money on this. Happily, the Bryce-Smiths have generously offered a limited edition print to be raffled in aid of the project. The print will be on display at the Championship show and tickets will be sold during the afternoon and at the Seminar. The winner will be drawn at the end of the Seminar.
The Club Championship Show is once again in the Cricket Pavilion at the Sports Connection. Don't forget that it is, as usual, unbenched. There will be a Raffle for the Club and Welfare in the morning (bring prizes if possible and buy tickets when you come), the Parnham's Welfare stall (bring things to sell and then buy other things to take home), the Saluki Calendar and the Saluki Magazine will be on sale so bring all your money. Unfortunately, Chris Ormsby will not be able to be at the show to run her usual silent auction so we shall be running a second Raffle in the afternoon, this one for a limited edition print donated by the Bryce-Smiths to provide money for a really good display for our breed at Discover Dogs at Crufts next year. Last, but by no means least, the Committee for Sudden Death have arranged for an expert canine cardiologist to be present to listen to Saluki hearts. This is available to everyone and is free. It is an opportunity to find out more about the heart conditions of healthy Salukis than regular vets are either equipped or trained to do."
Anyone interested in Saluki art or art in general, being close to London or visiting the city, might want to spend some time viewing the Wallace Collection, in Manchester Square. As one enters the building the first picture in sight happens to be the painting of 'The Arab Tent' by Sir Edwin Landseer. This famous picture includes two Salukis relaxing on their masters rugs as well as horses reclining and the infamous Landseer monkeys loitering on top of the tent. The whole exhibition give the impression of art acquired by a traveller with several paintings of the Middle East being prominent. As well as Landseer, DeCamp and Durer spring to mind although there are many other famous artists represented. If it is a rainy day and you haven't entered a dog show this might be a good alternative.
