SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 10 JULY, 1998

On the 14th June, 1998, Saluki Classes were included in the World Dog Show, in Helsinki, Finland. Helen attended and has informed me about some of the events. On Saturday evening, The Finnish Saluki Club had a gathering at the clubhouse of the Sighthound Club for visitors and club members. About 80 people attended. One of the highlights was a talk by Helen Graham on the Daxlore Salukis. Helen started off by showing a beautiful photograph of Ch. Alexandra of Daxlore which had been included in the Observer Encyclopaedia of Dogs. Later this photo was adopted and used by the AKC in their publication “The Standardisation of the Breed” which is used as a reference for all the breed standards in the USA. Helen explained that the Daxlore’s were to be found in most pedigrees of Salukis around the world and those in attendance had a chance to look at a photo album that she had compiled, on Daxlores past and present.

The next day was the judging and it was held in Helsinki Centre in a building similar to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. The area at the venue and around was spotlessly clean, apparently, no dog foulings at all. ( The World Show in Brussels held a couple of years ago was not so well kept as no one seemed to clean up after their dogs). The dog judging was in one ring and the bitch judging in another. Helen Williams mainly watched the dog judging and advises that Helen Graham was watching the bitches so I am sure she will relate her observations in the Northern Saluki Newsletter. The Dog and BOB judge was, Mrs Birgitha Runmarker from Sweden. Her BOB, and World Show Winner was a Swedish dog, bred in Australia, mainly of Jen Araby stock from the USA. He was, Multi Ch Baghdad Globetrotter owned by Nicklas Eriksson and Linda Frisen. Res Best Dog was Rirjo Jappinen’s Int Ch El Hamrah Zain Zaibaq. Globetrotter, to top off his illustrious career, went on to be placed 2nd in the Hound Group. The bitches were judged by Mr Terry Thorn. He too choice a Swedish bitch for his World Show Winner which was Anita Brolin’s Swedish Ch Shafaq Indunia Exidhi. His Res Best Bitch was Aila & Raimo Kinnaslampi’s Fin Ch El Hmarah Gamiilah . Helen Williams will be stewarding at Paignton Show so if anyone would like to see a marked catalogue from Helsinki, please go to the judges table where she will have her catalogue as well as a few photos.

Last Friday was Blackpool Championship Show, the judge for Salukis was Mrs Zena Thorn-Andrews. Her BCC, BOB, for her second CC, was Rosie Lewis’ Knightellington Zafa. RBCC was Mr & Mrs Gorton’s Al Caliph’s Sulabha. DCC, for his third and qualifying CC was Nick & Marie Bryce-Smith’s Kasaque Hyperion of Saruk. He was bred by Helen and myself and born on 10th October, 1995. His sire was Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic and his dam Ch Kasaque Eve. RDCC went to Paulene Kendall’s Ch Gulzar Al-Mutakabbir. Best Puppy was Ian Hodson and Jacque Faith’s Lusaki Nizam of Khonistan. Well done all.

Ann Macdonald telephoned with the news that her Ch Mabrooka Miraya has won the Pedigree Chum Special Champion Stakes at Blackpool Championship Show. Ann told us this is her third bitch to qualify. Miraya’s mother, Ch Saklawi Bishah of Mabrooka and Miraya’s sister Ch Mabrooka Matara have qualified in past years. This means that we will be having two Salukis representing us at the end of the year, namely Miraya and Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic. Pretty good going!!.

I spoke to Roy Wilson of the partnership of Hodson and Wilson and he has asked me to let everyone know that from now on Jacque Faith will be sharing their affix of Khoniston.
