Dr John Hudson has kindly sent the following comments: " I am writing to clarify the function of referees and their appointment at SGHC shows. Our Rules state that judges at Club shows shall be elected by postal ballot of the members of the Club. Nominations shall be made "in such manner and at such time as the Committee shall from time to time prescribe". Nothing is said about the appointment of referees and it is our custom to offer the post of referee to the next highest person on the ballot after the appointment of the judges. If that person cannot accept, we go to the next on the ballot and so on. Although Philip Browning says that this is "ludicrous", I think it has served us well. Every person on the ballot must be on one or other of the Club's judging lists (depending on the show) and there is of course no way that someone on the B list could be appointed referee for the Championship show. Everyone on the ballot for the Championship show has to be on one of the A lists; i.e. must be approved by the Club to give tickets. Any other arrangement would lead to us breaking Kennel Club rules. The system fails when the Secretary runs out of names on the ballot. The custom of the Committee in this case is to choose a suitable person at the next Committee meeting. Once again, this seems a sensible thing to do and the Committee is unlikely to pick someone from the wrong judging list. Indeed, the most sensible thing to do is to choose someone on the Committee, since they are going to be at the show anyway. And at this point, time is going to be too short to start working our way through another list, particularly in the case of the Limited show.
Constraints on a referee are few. They must turn up and they must not exhibit a dog nor enter one of their own dogs. Since they are not called upon to give CC's, the Kennel Club rule about the time which must elapse between giving tickets does not apply. The Club does not impose any restriction on a referee with respect to judging before or after the show. (The current Secretary got this completely wrong at the start of his career and has had to write a whole new set of letters to referees.)
I agree with Philip Browning that the office of referee is very important but I cannot see that the referee is called upon to judge the judges since he or she does not review any decision made by the other two judges but makes an entirely independent decision of his/her own.
Nor do I think that there is anything particularly wrong in the same person refereeing at two out of the three Club shows in one year. I would count myself very lucky indeed if I were to depend on a referee's judgement for Best in Show or Best Puppy at two of the Club shows in one year. (Only once in fifteen years of showing Salukis have I met a referee in her official capacity).
I must add that I write as a member and not as the Club Secretary. The Committee has not considered this matter yet. If anyone has a view which they would like the Committee to consider, please write to me (28 Cootes Lane, Fen Drayton, Cambs. CB4 5SL) before the next meeting on August 8th."
