SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES: WEEK ENDING JANUARY 9TH 1998

Mrs Toni Moore has sent me the following information regarding her Lusaki Libambah of Adhari: “A very childish and unsportsmanlike incident occurred at the recent LKA Championship Show. The long furnishings of one of ‘Amber’s’ ears was cut by at least 2 inches. It was also on the ‘show side’. I find this pathetic in the extreme and also a little worrying as this was presumable done by a dog-lover. There is photographic evidence proving that the ear feathering was deliberately cut and not the result of chewing or caused by rough housing in the fields. There is also no doubt about when and where it happened. I thought this incident worth bring to the attention of other Saluki exhibitors. With more than one dog to show it is impossible to be with them all the time”

I am saddened to announce the death of Mick and Sally Spooner’s Ch Kasaque Ezekiel. ‘Zeke’ was born on 22nd February 1987 and bred by Helen and myself. His first three Challenge Certificates were won in 1989, Brian Pether at Welks where he went BOB, Sue Rabey-Wilkinson at Birmingham National where he also won BOB and SKC, Judge Ann Birrill where he won BOB than went on the win the Hound Group. Our condolences go to the Spooner’s, who are, understandably, very upset over losing Zeke. His achievements over the last ten years have been many but mostly we will remember a good natured ‘chap’ who always represented our breed in the most positive manner.

A recent article in the KC Gazette refers to the use of mobile telephones around the area of the ring during judging. It seems that some disruption has been caused by individuals receiving and making calls at ringside, also in the ring and even by those judging. While we recognise the huge benefits of improved communications, interruptions during judging, where concentration is the most important factor, cannot be beneficial or fair to those looking for a well evaluated opinion. It could be that a ban, within a certain distance of the ring, is likely.
