Congratulations to Ms Lynda Langton and Al Caliphs Suhayl on going Reserve Best in Show, last Saturday at the Reading & District Kennel Association Open Show. The judge for Salukis was Mrs Sue Bounds and Best in Show was Mr Graham Osborne.

Christmas is not far away and I have to send the notes to ‘Our Dogs’ a two weeks ahead Of the publication date. If there is any information or announcement you would like me to include in the notes, prior to the holidays, please send the information well in advance.

Did you ever really want to make a good impression? Helen works extremely hard when we have puppies to make sure, when visitors arrive everything is perfect. The puppies’ run must be very tidy and inside and outside of their kennel immaculate. As we all know puppies are best at what they do the most, eating and the other thing. Last Tuesday Helen was up before the crack of dawn to prepare puppies and older dogs for visitors. Buzz Faber and Chris Ormsby were coming over to see the babies and then they were all going out to a local pub for some lunch. Helen did all her daily chores and then popped out to the shop for a few items so she could be back well before the guest, that were arriving at 12.30 p.m. Spot on 12.30, the guests arrived with Buzz being greeted lovingly by the grown up Salukis. When it came to visiting the puppies a minor problem came to light. The padlock on the kennel gate, was as it should be, locked. However, the keys to that padlock were nowhere to be found. Having searched everywhere for two hours it was decided that the keys were not to be found. The pub lunch that was planned was no longer possible so a trip to the village to an Italian Café became the only alternative. Before leaving though, it was important to see this incarcerated collective so a solidly built chair was brought to the kennel window so these ladies could have a peak into the dimly lit kennel. I imagine that little was perceived of their quality or even hardly their colour but they then headed off to lunch at approximately 3.30pm. After lunch and a trip to the DIY store to purchase drilling equipment as well receiving advice from the stores staff that the fire brigade could help if the drill didn’t, the group returned to attack the problem. One held the torch (it was dark by this time), the other held the electrical extension cable as it was wet on the ground while Helen drilled into the lock wearing a kitchen oven glove in case of ‘goodness knows what’. Amazingly the operation worked and by early evening the puppies were liberated!!! The visitor departed at 7.00pm from what had been planned as a luncheon arrangement. The moral of the story is……. always have a spare key.
