SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th August, 1998

In the June issue of The Northern Saluki Club Newsletter, the editor, Helen Graham has stated that the NSC is reviewing their policy for appointing judges for their club show. The article states that candidates, whose names have been nominated by members, to judge the two shows, are approved by the committee and put in rank order. The top six candidates are notified and asked whether they wish to be included in a ballot of the members and whether they are available for the show in question. On this basis the ballot is drawn up and circulated to members. This system has worked well but in the past two or three years many of those persons nominated have been unable to be included in the ballot because of prior commitments. It has therefore been recognised that the NSC may need to adopt a five year plan rather than a two year plan.

The following is a direct quote: “ It is certainly not and never has been NSC policy to nominate predominately committee members to judge its shows. Nor is it policy to give preference to candidates resident in the Midlands and North. It has never been NSC policy to exclude committee members from exhibiting at club shows because it is felt that to do so would seriously reduce entries. It is accepted that this situation needs to be reviewed, together with the selection of judges. Your views on the matter are invited. They should be submitted, preferably in writing to Dave Shaw.”

As this issue has obviously evoked some exchange of dialogue I am including Dave Shaw’s address which is Willowdene, Hull Road, Hemingborough, Selby, YO8 7QG. Hopefully anyone with an opinion will sit down and express them directly to the NSC.

Monday of this week was Leeds Championship Show. The judge was Mrs Zola Rawson. BOB,BCC and thus making her a champion was Ann Jones and Kevin Carter’s black/white parti bitch, Clearwing Beraq. She was born on 10th September, 1994 and bred by her exhibitors. Her sire is UK Ch, Can Ch, Am Ch Sedeki Azefer Bazu and dam. Pennyworth Katisha. RCBB was Rosey Lewis’ Knightellington Zafa. DCC was won by Paulene Kendall’s Ch Gulzar Al-Mutakabbir with the RDCC to Marie Bryce-Smith’s Kasaque Hyperion of Saruk. Best puppy was Joan Davies’s Lusaki Rah Rrashaba. Well done all.

Last weekend The CLA Game Fair was local to here. Helen went on Friday with two of our dogs representing Salukis in a parade of hunting dogs. They were paraded twice each day along with Greyhounds, Whippets and Deerhounds, in the main ring. A short explanation of the history of coursing with hounds was told. The lady commentator said that coursing use to be very popular on these islands and related the story of a certain course held in the vacinity of Liverpool. Explaining that the organisers wanted to have some extra entertainment during lunch time, at the meet, thay put on a steeple chase which later became the Grand National. Helen was asked to explain certain physical characteristics like the hare-foot and give some idea what the temperament of the Saluki is like. Helen explained that many owners tried to keep their hounds mult-functional having coursing dogs which were show dogs as well as family pets. The Deerhounds and the Whippets also stated they were multi-funtional with the Whippets out doing everyone by spending some of their spare time visiting the occupants in old persons homes.
