SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 6TH AUGUST 1999

SKOKLOSTER 1999. Surrounded by lakes and undulating countryside, plus Sweden's history, the setting for the Skokloster Shows are idyllic. The closest town is Segtuna, one of the oldest inhabited towns in Sweden. The showground has Skokloster Castle on one side and a lake on the other. We were fortunate to have a room in the hotel on the site. The rooms in this hotel are booked years in advance as Skokloster is the social event of the summer calendar. It was explained to us that everyone comes to Skoklosters to visit and get together with friends, to win or even place at the dog show is a bonus.

The overall show appeared to be very well organised, the atmosphere was relaxed and there was an overall holiday atmosphere where people are camping, eating under the stars. The judges for Salukis were Mrs Mavis Shellard and Dr Peter Arnold of Germany. Helen and I spent most of the time watching the judging by Mavis as there are two rings And it near impossible to concentrate on both rings. Mavis appeared to handle her large entry with ease though it must have been hard and she had a lot of dogs to asses. She judged the dogs on the first day and her Best Dog and BOB was Nord Champion Sharqiy Shaman Lami'n. On the second day, her winner of Best Bitch was German Ch Tashari Sawahin who became a Swedish Champion on the Day. We shall report some of Mavis' comments at a later date. Roger Shellard was at the show recording the events so if anyone would like to view the two days, a video and further details can be obtained from Roger on tel . 01977 649935.

At Skokloster, Roger, Helen and myself saw for the first time a Galgo Espanol. All three of us fell in love with a little grizzle bitch. To describe this breed, firstly as the name denotes, they come from Spain and they are FCI Approved so had classes at the show. The little bitch was about 25 inches at the shoulder with brindle colouring with a wire coat. She was very much like a lurcher with a kind and gentle character with a certain aloofness. We do have photos if anyone would like to see them.

While we were away, Leeds Championship Show was the highlight of the UK Dog Show scene. The judge for Salukis was Mr Nev Newton. BOB, BCC was Mrs D Garratt's C (CH) Caryna Hera with the RBCC to Mrs H Graham's Daxlore Miranda. DCC was Mrs M Bryce-Smith's Ch Mumtaz Moon Magic, RDCC to Mrs H. Graham's Daxlore Mirabile. I apologise to the puppy and their owner as I do not know who they are.
