SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 6th April 2001

Last Sunday the Annual General Meeting of the Saluki or Gazelle Hound Club took place at the Cambridgeshire Moat House Hotel Nr. Cambridge. There was a good attendance of around 62 members. The meeting opened with a minute of silence for three members of the Club that had died during the year; namely, Mr. Harry Watling, Mrs Ann Barrett and Mrs J Rivett. The accounts were received and approved then the treasurer recommended that subscriptions should be increased to £11.00 for single member (over 60’s £7), Joint Membership £14.00 (over 60’s £10.00). This was approved by the membership. The new President of SGHC is now Mrs Chris Ormsby and the Vice-president is Mrs Marie Bryce-Smith. The retiring President, Mrs Tessa Abbott received A plant arrangement from the Club for her hard work. The new Show Manager, Miss Nicola Quadling thanked the retiring Show Manager, Mrs Kay Perkins and she was presented with a set of engraved glasses as a token for her hard work. The judges for the Club Limited Show for 2002 were announced and they are Mrs Shirley Rawling and Mr Andrew Brace. Open Show 2002, judges are Mrs Sheila Harmer and Mrs Pam Mottershaw with the referee, Mrs Diane Cook. Championship Show 2003 judges are Mr Rene Mattheeuwsen, Mr Philip Browning with the referee Mrs A. Macdonald. The retiring Welfare Warden, Mrs Karen Fisher was also thank by the meeting a presented with engraved bowl as a token of appreciation for her hard work.

The AGM passed the proposals from the Committee referring to the setting up on a steering committee to organize and run the coursing activities of the Club. Please watch this space for further information!

Buzz Faber ran a raffle for the Welfare at the AGM and this made £70.00 for the funds. Buzz also has a spare set of Kennel Club Stud Books of the years 70s, 80s, and 90s. If anyone would like to purchase these, with a donation to Welfare please contact her on 01242 602435

I would like to thank Mr. Michael McCormick Smith for sending me the following information: “The Saluki Welfare Fund AGM took place on 25th. March with 24 members (including Committee and Trustees) present. The Chairman welcomed Ann Blake as the new SGHC Welfare Officer and paid tribute to Karen Fisher's work during her years in the post. She welcomed Denise Rogers's decision to continue as NSC Welfare Officer and thanked her for it and for all the work she had done and was continuing to do. She said that the Fund had been criticized for occasionally assisting with re-homing saluki crosses and said that from now on such crossbreeds would be re-homed through Lurchersearch despite the fact that they resulted in a "profit" for the Fund.

The Treasurer reported that income was down by almost 50% on 1999, and that overall the Fund had lost £288 in 2000 (£1691 in 1999). If this drain on the Fund's reserves continues it will eventually bring the viability of the Fund into question. He thanked the fundraisers and contributors for their hard work and generosity throughout the year.

The Wardens' report showed that 21 salukis had been rehomed directly by the Fund during the year, and a further number where salukis had been rehomed by Dog Homes or Shelters with the Wardens' assistance (this helps to keep the Fund's kenneling and vet bills down). There were two cases of stolen salukis, both of which had happy endings. The Wardens urge all saluki owners to have their dogs permanently identified, preferably by tattooing which is known to deter thieves. The Officers of the Fund, and the candidates for the two vacancies on the Committee, were all elected unopposed, and we welcome Margaret Worrell (previously co-opted) and Elaine Rushton to the Committee. A minor amendment to the Constitution (previously agreed by the Charity Commission), dealing with giving notice of General Meetings, was approved unanimously.

The problem of high vet bills for salukis coming into Welfare was discussed. The consensus was that the Fund should not contemplate having a saluki put down except in extreme circumstances, for example where a dog's injuries were so severe that its quality of life would be seriously and permanently affected, or where its temperament was so vicious that it could not safely be re-homed”

Our judge for Southern Counties Championship Show has changed as Mr Harry Jordan Has sadly died. The new judge is Miss Nicola Quadling who originally was suppose to judge at the Hound Association of Scotland, which was cancelled by the Foot and Mouth epidemic. As Southern Counties is located in a agricultural area we will cross our fingers that the show will go on.
