SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 5 June, 1998

Kay Perkins, the Show secretary, called to inform us of the entries at the SGHC Open Show which will be held on Sunday, 14th June. In last weeks copy of Our Dogs I put in most of the relevant information but if that is unavailable to you, please contact Kay on 01795 470918. The entries are as follows: 43 Dogs making up an entry of 51 with 14 not for competition. There are 58 bitches making up 65 entries with 13 not for competition.

Recently a friend acquired a new puppy. She took it to her vets at 9 weeks for its first innoculation and at 12 weeks for its second. The subject did not ask the vet in advance how much the two injections would cost, having worked with them for a sufficient period of time believing them to be fair and working at the market rate. When the vet asked for £60.00 including VAT, the individual was shocked. Within the same time frame we had our puppies injected using the same system with shots at 9 weeks and 12 weeks. The price for each injection was £15.00 plus VAT. This gives an inclusive total of £17.63 per injection which makes the alternative vets charges 70% more expensive than ours per puppy. We had to pay extra as our vet visited us at home, but the injections on their own were the £15.00 as stated. I would be very interested in hearing from different readers what prices they are paying for the two shots. There must be a market rate taking into consideration such items as location (facility costs) and labour cost differences. The vaccine our vet uses is Delcovac. Further to the notes last week the following is the detail of the entry at the National Specialty (yes!, I can spell speciality) for the Saluki Club of America in Kentucky:- Thursday--Sweepstakes (Jim Adams) 130 Salukis----64 Veteran Sweepstakes, 66 Regular Sweepstakes. Judging will begin at 8:00 AM. Friday--Saluki Dogs (Mavis Shellard) 161 Saluki Dogs----119 Class Dogs, 6 Coursing Dogs, 36 Veteran Dogs. Judging will begin at 8:00 AM. Obedience (Michael Carlucci) 16. Judging will begin at 9:00 AM, followed by Jr. Showmanship (Mary Miller) 6 Jrs. Saturday--Saluki Bitches (Mavis Shellard) 193 Saluki Bitches----151 Class Bitches, 8 Coursing Bitches, 34 Veteran Bitches. Judging will begin at 8:00 AM. Sunday--141 Salukis (Mavis Shellard)----3 Braces, 14 Stud Dogs, 10 Brood Bitches, 54 BOB Dogs, 57 BOB Bitches. Judging will begin at 8:00 AM.
