SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 3 July, 1998

Firstly I would like to apologise to Joan and Owen Davies for giving incorrect information as to who won the ‘Best Puppy’ at Southern Counties Championship Show. The winner was Lusaki Rah Rrashaba, not as stated in my earlier report.

Last Sunday was the Border Union Agricultural Society Championship Show. This show is held in one of the most beautiful venues in the Country. I always love visiting the Border Counties of Scotland where this show is held. The judge was Mrs Denise Courtney. BOB,DBB and later Group 3, was Bryce-Smith’s Ch.Mumtaz Moon Magic. RDCC was awarded to Kendall’s Ch.Gulzar Al- Mutakabbir. BCC, for her first Challenge Certificate was Connolly’s Minsha Miss Mischief. Her breeding is Ch Isheya Asiil ex Ch Mumtaz Nocturne of Minsha. She was bred by her owners and she was born 9th May, 1993. RCCB was Shimmin’s Cranstal Enchantment. There were no puppies entered.

Dr. Dan Belkin, the owner of Bayt Shahin Salukis, most famous as open field coursers in the U.S.A., has died. Our sympathy goes to Laura his wife and the coursing clan in California who will miss him greatly. During our stay in the Pacific North-West we met and upon our return to the U.K. we repatriated Knightellington Nimrod a dog which Dan had taken out to the United States for his potential coursing qualities. Dan had spent a year here in England undertaking an academic appointment in Bristol some years previous to our meeting and during that time put his scientific mind into an analysis of Knightellington Esmail, to establish what made him so successful. I don’t know if he ever found the answer but it brought about a breeding between ‘Blanco’ and one of Vera Watkins bitch’s Windswift Aziza, to produce Windswift Bayt Shahin Afri the foundation of his line and the mother of his beloved Bayt Shahin Impulse CC,CM. My strongest memory of Dan was of a long discussion about Saluki physiology which included opinions about the loin as the main attribute for speed, about pasterns cushioning and springing for endurance and the ability to turn quickly and many other considerations until finally after comparing many different species, in many locations, Dan concluded that, the main attribute was desire. He knew what he was talking about and I knew a little bit more than I had at the beginning. Thank you Dan.
