Mrs Kay Perkins, PRO and Show Manager for the SGHC has sent me the entries for the Championship Show which will be held on Saturday, 17 October at the Sports Connexion, Ryton-on Dunsmore, Coventry. Mrs Anne Birrell will judge 84 dogs from 97 entries with 15 not for competition. Bitches, to be judged by Miss Nocola Quadling, has 95 making 115 entries with 11 not for competition. Kay asked that we bring the usual donations of goodies for the Welfare Stall and the Raffle Prizes.
We have heard that Murrey Ormsby has been unwell and is in hospital. We all wish him a speedy recovery and out thoughts are with him and Chris at this time.
Mike Logan has sent me this interesting tale about his Saluki: ‘16 yrs ago I was employed in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a tech rep on the F-15. On weekends I would take my dirtbike into the mountains of Taif to explore. On one of these jaunts, I came across a litter of starving abandoned pups and took all six, putting them in my jersey and bringing them back to base.I gave all of them away except for one that I kept for myself. This pup did not have any unusual traits till it was about 4 months old then it's legs began to grow.I brought a friend of mine who had been in country for many yrs and he informed me that I had a Saluki![smooth] I didn’t name him until I did some research. The Arabs call them desert fox so I named him Rommel. We spent the next 4yrs enjoying the desert, me on my Rm125 and Rom right beside me. After we returned to the United States our exercise program had to be altered. Instead of following the bike, he would follow me, in my truck for a mile or so, then return home. More than one good meaning soul turned me in for torturing the dog. They didn't understand. Rom loved it. Every muscle in his body would be defined at full speed, it was pure beauty. He has protected my family for 16 yrs without any medical problems which I think comes from his pure genes..Unfortunately, it was mandatory to have the dog neutered by company rules. Last year Rom fell and injured his spine, now he doesn't get around well and has lost control of his bladder. The end is near and we will miss this loyal companion. We wish we could preserve some of his DNA. He may be the last of the wild Saluki's.’
Most of our readers will have read the requirements for judging Salukis as proposed by the SGHC. I know one person has contacted our show secretary and she has stated that we do not need stewards for out up coming show as the job had already been allocated. Perhaps it would have been better if the SGHC has put in their requirements, stewarding at Salukis at Championship level. Any comments. Next week I will continue my dialogue on VWD with a very interesting letter from Anthea Akroyd-Hunt.
