SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING SALUKI NOTES WEEK ENDING 2ND JULY, 1999.

This week I have two Championship Shows to report. The first is Three Counties Agricultural Society, which was held last Thursday. The Show is no longer in conjunction with the Three Counties Agricultural Show, so the traffic jams that Marred that show a few years ago were non-existent. Our judge, awarding Challenge Certificates for the first time was Mrs Gina Corcoran. She chose for BOB,DCC Mr A. MacDonald's Ch Mabrooka Khamriy. RDCC went to C.M. H.V. Williams & Mrs R. Redfern's El Hamrah Mehrab Khalifa (IMP). BCC, for her first CC was Messrs Wieden & Farrar's Sedeki Irada. Her breeding is Ch Asayaad Yimkin from Knightellington ex Am Ch Sedeki Mazuri Cha Har (imp). She was born on the 8th August 1996 and her owners are her breeders. The RBCC went to Mrs F & Mr K Hadfield's Ch Bamjoeh Beguine of Lokhandar. Best Puppy was Mr A Rawson's Mumtaz Desdemona. Congradulations to Ch Mabrooka Khamriy who later in the Day won a Group 1 under Judge Mr S. E. B. McIlrath.

The second show was two day later in beautiful Kelso,Scotland. It was Border Union Show. The judge was Mrs Ann MacDonald. Her BOB, DCC for his first CC was Mr H Sanghera, Ms J Walker & Mr & Mrs Hamilton's Miskanda Tiger Bay at Kamsun. His breeding is Ch Kamsun Tiercel ex Miskandas Santa Fe. He was born on 16th September, 1996 and bred by Mrs Cotterill. The RDCC was Mrs M. Bryce-Smith's Ch Kasaque Hyperion of Saruk. BCC was Mrs D Garratt's Caryna Hera, for her Second CC. RBCC went to Mrs G Corcoran's Seafleet Zarzuella.

Joanne Mahon has kindly forwarded us the following information about The Saluki Club of America Specialty that was held on the weekend of 11th June. There are usually around 400 entries for this show so any placement at all is a bonus.. "Just a bit of news for your weekly breed notes report: At Kentucky, Timaru Victoria's Secret, won Winner's Bitch and Best of Winners, making her a champion on the day. She is full litter sister to my male import Timaru Valkyrie of Jazirat." Congradulations are due to the bitches owners and her breeder, Mrs Leslie Brabyn.

On a sadder note I have received the following information from Marilyn Evill: "I regret to say that 6 weeks after his daughter was put down (at 5 years) with dilated cardio-myopathy, I have just put down Ch Ubu Roi Al Caliphs ( sired by Ch Al caliphs Dawnflight x Ch Burydown Qabillah) as he was suffering from right & left sided heart failure plus liver failure. Aged 8 he was diagnosed shortly after I put down Rushira and although the heart condition was stabilised and could have given him a further 2 months, the liver failed and it was more humane to let him go. He won 5 CCs plus a few Res CCs and although I withdrew him from official coursing meetings following his badly broken leg, he still regularly caught both Hares and Rabbits on his walks.

A lovely dog with a gentle temperament, both he and his daughter were a pleasure to live with and I now have no Salukis to share my life to my great regret. I urge people to address the health status of the breed; Neither of my dogs had any signs of impending problems and I have always taken extra care to have their heart status monitored regularly. I would like to express my thanks to Jenny Macro for her help and support and I am especially grateful to Jenny Ziman who paid for Rushira's heart to be sent to Mary Dee Sist in the States to aid their research programme into Saluki heart problems."
