SALUKI (GAZELLE HOUND) BREED NOTES

SALUKI NOTES: WEEK ENDING 5TH DECEMBER, 1997

Philip Browning telephoned to let us know that Mrs Ann Henderson passed away on the 15th November, 1997. There will be a private funeral and no donations or flowers are requested by the family. Personally I never met Mrs Henderson but I know she and her husband Victor made up the first smooth UK Champion. He was Ch Kumasi Kommondan. He was born on 2nd February, 1958. Not only was he the first smooth champion but he was of pure desert stock. The Hendersons were not only involved in showing but Kommondan excelled on the coursing field. Mrs. Henderson was also a championship show judge with appointments undertaken mostly during the 1950’s and 60’s.

To keep the Kumasi legacy alive, the Victor Henderson Memorial Trophy was presented by Mrs Henderson for the Saluki winning most courses, in all stakes, at the official meeting of the club. During the ‘ole’ days, before the motorways, when the Saluki Club held a coursing meeting in Norfolk, Mrs Henderson used to invited everyone back to her house for the most scrumptious teas. The whole table was full of delicious things to eat with pots and pots of hot tea. Quoting from the SGHC Open Show catalogue, at the show, ‘a silver spoon is presented by Mrs. Anne Henderson, in memory of Mr & Mrs V. Henderson’s Smooth Ch Kumasi Kommondan, to be won outright, for the best smooth Saluki.’ Additionally there is a points trophy for ‘the smooth winning the most points in all classes at Championship Shows’, within a twelve months period, which is The Kumasi Kommondan Trophy.

The deadline for editorial and advertisements for the next edition of “The Saluki” is 14th January.
