Extended Pedigree Summary for Am Ch Bijans Flying Angel

I recently researched the pedigree of Am Ch Bijans Flying Angel for our friends Mannie and Eadie Glazer. Its a very interesting pedigree and with Mannie and Eadies agreement I have posted below the summary of the pedigree I did for them.

The Pedigree Extended Summary Report - Shown below is a computer produced extended pedigree summary report that lists the 20 ancestors that occur most in a pedigree at a particular generation level. In this instance we selected 9 generations. As well as listing the ancestors and how many times they appear in total, the report also shows how many times they occur on each side of the pedigree. If you look at the first report for Qamari Flying Colours, you will notice that Maymum of Moornistan appears 33 times in total in the 9 generation pedigree, 28 times on the sire side but only 5 times on the dams side. In the same list, further down, you can see that Crown Crest Tae Joan appears 12 times in the dam side of the pedigree and not at all in the sires side. So, the report can be useful for giving the reviewer a feel for distribution of ancestors within a pedigree

Lets look at Ch Qamaris Flying Colors extended pedigree report first. Unusually for an American pedigree, Shirkhan of Grandeur DOES NOT end up as the ancestor who appears most in the pedigree at this level, Maymum of Moornistan does. The Moornistan lines come down from a German import into the US (Djaji Vom Falkenwalde) who's lines go back to early English lines and some Belgium (Barukhzy) ancestors. Other Moornistan lines come down from the UK Charikar lines which go back to Swedish and Dutch lines. This is reflected in the summary which includes names such as Xenos Vdom (Dutch), Rashna Roches (Belgium) , Barukhzys Dhrstadyumna (Belgium), Crown Crest (leading back to Vdom/Dutch), Tanjores Domino from Sweden etc. Another way of looking at the pedigree was to run a seperate report that calculates any inbreeding and lists the dogs that contribute to it. This seperate report (not shown here) confirmed that the modest amount of inbreeding is way back in the 5/6/7/8th generations. The Afghans that contribute to any inbreeding were Jamicas Rani Fafnir (out of a Moornistan sire), Shirkhan of Grandeur, Moornistans Maximillian, Tanjores Domino, (Sweden) Akaba's Top Brass, Maymum of Moornistan, Tajmahal Kenya (Sweden)., Hassan Ben of Moornistan and Xenos Vdom (Dutch).

Next, lets look at Ch Bijans Captured Angels's extended pedigree report. This time Shirkhan of Grandeur DOES end up top of the list, which is usually the case with US pedigrees. The rest of the names in the list are from the familiar Akaba/Grandeur interplay lines with only one overseas name amongst them - Ophaal Of Crown Crest who was imported from Holland. We also ran the inbreeding report (not shown) which revealed a different set of ancestors as contributors - Coastwind Abraxas, Fantasi's Star Light, Shirkhan of Grandeur, Coastwind Nepenthe, plus three more Akaba's and another Coastwind.

If we now look at the extended pedigree summary over 10 generations for Mannie and Eadie's - Ch Bijans Flying Angel (sibling of the above two Afghans) you can see how the ancestor count works out. Surprise surprise, Shirkhan of Grandeur is top of the list!, but occurs more on the sires side than the dams. By contrast Akaba ancestors occur largely on the dam's side of the pedigree. Obviously bringing two different lines together would create a new balance and distribution of ancestors, and this is shown below.

Finally, we ran the inbreeding summary program and top contributor, as expected, was Jeherans Seyquin, followed by Jamicas Rani Fafnir, Autumn Heather, Shirkhan of Grandeur, Akaba's Top Brass, Akaba's Royal Blue, Moornistans Maximillian, Tanjores Domino, Akaba's Gigi in White and Charikar Wazir. It is interesting to note that allthough Shirkan occurs most in the pedigree, he is not the top inbreeding contributor, in fact several other hounds, some of which are derived from European lines contribute more.

I have not studied this pedigree much further, and you see see for yourself where the ancestors exist and how their numerical balance shifts when undertaking a breeding. It is interesting though and a couple of points occured to me. First, and its pretty well known, Shirkhan of Grandeur is pretty well endemic throughout modern US pedigrees, however (eg the pedigree of Qamaris Flying Colors) this is not always the case. It is also intertesting to discover how ancestors, way back in the pedigree can assume a significance in any particular mating. I Could spend hours on this, you can see why I find US pedigrees so fascinating. I hope this brief summary has proved interesting to you.
