1. From weekly breed notes December 1997 (Michael Williams)
Philip Browning telephoned to let us know that Mrs Ann Henderson passed away on the 15th November, 1997. There will be a private funeral and no donations or flowers are requested by the family. Personally I (Michael Williams) never met Mrs Henderson but I know she and her husband Victor made up the first smooth UK Champion. He was Ch Kumasi Kommondan (Kumasi Rihan x Kumasi Dhiba). He was born on 2nd February, 1958, registered colour silver fawn and white. Not only was he the first smooth champion but he was of pure desert stock. The Hendersons were not only involved in showing but Kommondan excelled on the coursing field. Mrs. Henderson was also a championship show judge with appointments undertaken mostly during the 1950’s and 60’s.
To keep the Kumasi legacy alive, the Victor Henderson Memorial Trophy was presented by Mrs Henderson for the Saluki winning most courses, in all stakes, at the official meeting of the club. During the ‘ole’ days, before the motorways, when the Saluki Club held a coursing meeting in Norfolk, Mrs Henderson used to invite everyone back to her house for the most scrumptious teas. The whole table was full of delicious things to eat with pots and pots of hot tea. Quoting from the SGHC Open Show catalogue, at the show, ‘a silver spoon is presented by Mrs. Anne Henderson, in memory of Mr & Mrs V. Henderson’s Smooth Ch Kumasi Kommondan, to be won outright, for the best smooth Saluki.’ Additionally there is a points trophy for ‘the smooth winning the most points in all classes at Championship Shows’, within a twelve months period, which is The Kumasi Kommondan Trophy.
2. Pedigree research and notes February 2000 (Steve Tillotson)
The litter containing Kumasi Kommandan was registered in May 1958 and included three bitches, K Shiltarah, K Joharah and K Zibaq, and a second dog K Sharif. All five gained stud book entries between 1958 and 1960.
Kumasi Kommandan was mated to his litter sister Kumasi Shiltarah, one of the offspring of this litter registered in September 1964, Kumasi Kabisa, a bitch, gained a stud book entry in 1966 Kumasi Shiltarah produced a litter earlier in 1964, sired by Mazsuri Zedekiah which produced the UK Champion Sedeki Mazuri Badshah, a black and white particolour. Badshah had several litters, mainly with bitches of Sedeki breeding thus proliferating the Kumasi lines. A breeding in 1972 involving a Badshah son Ch Mazuri Sedeki Tisa and a Mazuri bitch produced Ch Mazuri Lail. Thismating carried Kumasi Shiltarah on the sire side, and her litter brothers on the dam side. An interesting pedigree, showing the interplay between Ajman/Mazuri/Sedeki in that era.
In 1977 Ch Mazuri Lail was bred to Ch Ir Ch Sedeki Barre which produced Ch Kaus Kezia. This pedigree involved a doubling up on Badshah (Kumasi Shiltarah son), and included lines from Mazuri via Ghazala Cassius back to Ch Kumasi Kommandan, further strengthening the contribution of Kumasi to these bloodlines.
Ch Kauz Kezia in matings with two different bitches produced three champions carrying the Pennyworth affix, ensuring further proliferation of the ancestoral Kumasi lines (Steve Tillotson, February 2000)
