Miss Denyer and some of her hounds
(This is just a starter page and will be reworked/added to in due course)
Miss E Denyer was one of the founding pioneer breeders of Afghan Hounds when they first arrived in England. Miss Denyer bred exclusively from the Bell Murray type. Miss Denyer was co-founder of the first Afghan Hound Club - the British Afghan Hound Club, formed in 1925 with Captain Waterlow Fox (Wyke Afghans) as President and Miss Clara Bowring as Treasurer. The club was disbanded in 1931.
Miss Denyer is notable for some unique "firsts". She was the first to be granted a prefix in the breed ("of Kaf"), and her Champion Taj Mahip Of Kaf earned the first ever Challenge Certificate for the breed at Crufts in 1926.
Kaf kennel is especially influential in terms of the establishment of the breed in the USA. Two UK bred litter brothers, Badshah of Ainsdart and Tufan Of Ainsdart were amongst the original four Afghans exported to the USA as foundation bloodines of the breed in that country. The dam of the Ainsdart brothers was a Taj Mahip Of Kaf daughter - Ku-Mari of Kaf.
//article to be continued and expanded// .... in the meantime..... Recently (April 2003) I added a small photo/card to my collection, sourced from Australia. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had seen the photo before somewhere, and lo and behold I have now found the original photo/reference
Here's the first picture, the one from Australia....
I was informed that this Australian card was issued by Sweetacres Champion Chewing Gum in 1932. It is quite a small card, measurig 2 x 1.5 inches. Printed on the back of the card is the following: "Sweetacres Champion Chewing Gum. Favourite Dogs Afghan Hound. Their greatest pecularity is the varying length of their coat. Short on the body and long underneath and on eyes and ears. Height about 28 inches. Brown and fawn colouring. Card #11 in series of 48 favourite dogs
Here's the original photo......
This was published in UK Country Life in 1932, so clearly the Sweetacres card used the photograph from Country Life. And we now know that the name of the Afghan Hound, is indeed one of Miss Denyer's breeding - Batmar Of KafSteve Tillotson 2003
