(HANDLING THE AFGHAN IN THE SHOW RING)HANDLING THE AFGHAN IN THE SHOW RING This photo arrived recently and shows Ch. Gengala Super Tramp, handled by Louise Hickie, going Best in Group at Melbourne Royal Show in October 1997. As soon as we saw it we recognised that it provides a graphical example of handling an Afghan. This example illustrates several important aspects of successful handling in the show ring today.
Firstly it shows precisely what is meant by a "Loose Lead". Note that the handler (Louise) is holding the lead between thumb and forefinger and that it is not tight but is loose enough for the bitch to be able to move in a balanced fashion without being pulled about by a tight lead.
Secondly - excellent example of "a style of high order" - again without being strung up - and showing correct head and tail carriage etc.
Thirdly, look at her "running gear" - the foot timing and placement - great front extension, tremendous drive behind. Just as the left front foot is hitting the ground the same side rear foot has finished its thrust and is just completing the "follow through" before moving forward for the next propulsive stride. At the same time the right front foot is finishing its stride and the right rear foot is just about to land on the spot the front foot is vacating.
This is a classical example of "balanced movement". It is so rare to get a movement photo that shows so many features of correct movement that we thought you might like to see it. Our thanks to Jim and Louise Hickie at Gengala for allowing us to use the photograph. Steve.
