Reigh and Dewey Abrams
(Page1)This section on Dureigh Afghan Hounds originally came about at the suggestion of David Baker, USA (dbaker@columbus.rr.com) who provided several of the photographs shown below. Since then, Laurie Goodell, USA, (wgoodell@ismi.net) has provided additional photographs with comments by Reigh Abrams of Dureigh.
Researching the AKC Stud Book, reveals that Dureigh Kennels were established around 1946 by Reigh and Dewey Abrams in Ohio, USA. The first Afghans I have traced registered to the Abrams were a brother and sister bred by a Dr Mckain of Pittsburg (Cainbrook Kennels) in May 1946. These two Afghans were - Cainbrook Asiya (b), and Cainbrook Karatian (d) were predominently of "Arthea" breeding.
The first breeding I have traced so far which carried the "Dureigh" affix occured in March 1948. This was a red dog - Dureigh's Ja Ja Ba of Hillbanks, sired by the Abram's Cainbrook Karatian out of the bitch Hazara of Harline. The Hazara kennel was owned by Howard Warner, also of Ohio, and his lines also carried Arthea breeding.

This early breeding is based largely on the three US imports from the UK to the Prides Hill Kennels - Badshah of Ainsdart, Westmill Omar and Asra Of Ghazni. The pedgigree also contains the US import from the UK Ganputti Achmed Ben Hassan. The next breeding I found occured also in 1948, on 11th November, again the sire was Cainbrooks Karatian but out of the Arken lineage inbred bitch - Yak Haks Gem. Interestingly, the breeder is listed as Reigh "Berry" Abrams. This litter included the dog - Dureighs Dali, a red with black mask. There was a third litter sired by Cainbrooks Karatian in 1950 to a bitch from the Five Miles Kennel. However, these Cainbrook Karatian breedings do not appear to prevail in subsequent Dureigh bloodlines, but further research is needed to confirm this.
Ch Kandar of Riverside Bey Bombay Of Five Mile In between the second and third litters, the Abrams bred a a litter sired by Kandar of Riverside out of Bey Bombay of Five Mile which produced the bitch Dureighs Dey Abrama. This was a subtle shift in breeding emphasis at Dureigh. It retained the Prides Hill lines via Bey Bombay of Five Mile, whilst introducing new lines via Kandar of Riverside. These new lines included Sardar Khan El Kabul (UK import) and, inclusion of Tufan Of Ainsdart (littermate to Badshah) lines via the US bred bitch Flo Flo of Ghazni. Kandar and Bey Bombay are the foundations of Dureigh's breeding program..
