(Afghan Hound Debate- preserve the original Afghan Hound?)AFGHAN HOUND DEBATE
(DEBATE SUMMARY)
Response 009
Date: 31 December 1997
From: Jim Hickie
I will wind up this debate with a few brief comments following on the most recent contribution from Terri Borash
There is little doubt that the overwhelming opinion among the respondents (both published and private) is that the Afghan Hound has been involved in change since it was first introduced to the West and that it will continue to change irrespective of any ! opinions held that it should be maintained as it was at some period in the past. Those who advocated the alternative point of view, while in the minority, certainly had more to say on the subject and their contributions are interesting even if you do not agree with them.
Unfortunately the number of contributions was very small (just over twenty overall) so one could hardly draw conclusions as to the general feeling of Afghan breeders/exhibitors on the subject.
Personally I feel that Terri summed up the case for continued development of the breed in her very first observation about the evolution of man etc. and her later comment that "We cannot stop change".
The Breed Standard is there to maintain the breed essentials and those characteristics that define an AFGHAN. If breeders and judges do not deviate from this there is still plenty of room for development of the breed while still maintaining the features ! that distinguish the Afghan.
