Another two months have gone by, two very sucess-
ful meeting have been completed. At Newbury BiF
went to Diana Webber's Whippet Krafty Cockney,
while at Billinghurst Diana Duckenfield's Saluki
Mabrooka Kajahl took the honoured position, becing
the second Saluki to do it this season. It is nice to see
these youngsters, as they both came from Class 1 in
their breeds, doing so well in the environment that
comes natural to running hounds.
You will read about the problems that we had at
Billinghurst later in the Newsletter- which was
nearly cancelled.
The weather at Newbury was hot but OK for the
Dogs with a reasonably long course set out, which
most hounds followed well, with the final scores
being very close. This brings me to the point that if
there is a tie for BoB or BiF we will have to have a
run off. BoB is straight forward as the tied hounds
will compete with one another,. but for BiF with
different breeds each dog would have to run a further
course and be scored, and it would have to have a
partner to run against. This has come about since the
Judges mark the Speed instead of the timekeeper
giving times and the computer working out the score
for Speed. I managed to get the results ready very
quick after the last run at Billinghurst as I was
putting them in just after the judges had witten out
the sheets. 1 hope to do this in future, so don't go
rushing off as soon as the last run is complete as you
could have to challenge for BoB or BiF .
At Billinghurst the day was warm and blustery with
the downpore at lunch time, but it soon dried out
well, and all the runs were completed in good time.
As you can see from the scores things were again
very close with two Saluki's tieing for first place in
class 2.
Our condolence must go to Judy Pralle who lost her
Borzoi Almaz and to Miss Noel-Smith for her
Whippet Summer Carnival., We are very sorry to
loose two very keen lure coarsing hounds.
Our next meeting will be on Sunday 15th. September
at the Gymkana Field ,Makney, Belper in Derby-
shire, start time will be 10am. prompt.

Behind the Scene Billinghurst!
Why is it always at Billinghurst that problems
arise and why when I go on the day of setting
up. The date was agreed in January but on the
20th.August we get a phone call to say that the
usual field is being used for a 12 hour lawn
mower race. We had been given a new field 'The
Big Barn Field' behind the football field.
On arrival Nick was already waiting a feat not
often known, and had gone to reception to get
the keys to the football field - No one at
Reception - not open on a Saturday. The lad on
duty at the Farm Shop, try the Hall of Residence
he said - to no avail. The groundsman should
have the key - no groundsman available. What
about the Farm Manager, so off went Nick &
Gary. Returning with A KEYI ! We set off for
the field Volvo trailer & Escort. Said key didn't
fit and a slight traffic jam had built up-back to
square one. Found farm worker who had a key
to the back way into the field, but we would
have to cross a field full of sheep so all gates had
to be secured behind us. On arriving at the field
we found 18" long grass and cracks in the
ground up to a foot across. Nick & Gary's faces
were a picture, back across the sheep field to find
the gate padlocked - a combination padlock!!
Three men, all with engineering knowledge,
stood scratching heads. 'Easy' I said, 'take the
gate off the hinges' - 'can't be done' said 3 wise
men as a rusted on nut stared them in the face.
Nick rushed for the toolbox returning with a
socket, which was the wrong size any way. Paul
said, not to try to undo the stock fencing
attached to the bottom of the gate and hooked
onto the fencing,as it would be better to use
pliers instead of my fingers. Having acheived
this I stood back and said 'Right boys, lift'! !
By now stress levels were pretty high and Nick
& Gary trundled back to the Hall of Residence,
to be told the Principle was cutting his lawns. So
off to the Principle, half a hour later, they had
been given the option of either the football field,
the field behind the lawn mower event, an
apology and a cup of coffee. The field behind
the lawn mower event was great but was full of
sheep so off to the football field, this time
leaving the Volvo & trailer behind in the car
park. I pulled into the gateway, out jumped the
boys over the 'padlocked' gate to inspect the
football field. I just happened to look at the gate
and realised it wasn't padlocked any more so
having opened it I shouted 'Hey guys, if one of
you could lift the centre post out we could
possibly start setting up.' 3 very embaressed
males ambled back muttering something about
smart arsed women. So you see fellow lure
Coursers nothing is ever as it seems!! So just
give a thought occaisionally on the day before
you come Lure coursing to the 'merry' group of
possibly 4 who battle with the elements and
hassles out of their control. In fairness to Nick,
.the tent would never have been erected without
his sailing knowledge as it was blowing a force 9
and at one point it looked like a semi-inflated
hot air balloon. Paul did a wonderful and very
quick job of weilding the lump hammer and
Gary and Keith set up the course ably encour-
aged by Di's cups of tea. Having arrived at 1 lam
it took till lpm to get onto the field and by 4.30,
Nick, Gary, Paul and myself left Keith and Di to
clear up.
P.S. There will be a Bonanza Raffle at Newbury
Any donated prizes greatly appreciated - espe-
cially breed items ie. pictures, models etc.
Sue.
See you at Belper on SUNDAY l5th.September
and Newbury 3rd. November
