BSFA - THE SPORT OF LURE COURSING

BSFA NEWSLETTER - APRIL 1996

Round up notes from first few months.

The winter now seems to be leaving us behind, with spring showing its presence in the gardens and hedgerows. We held our first meeting at Sulhamp- stead in March, the week after Crufts. On the Saturday, setting up it was very pleasent, gently breezes and hazy sunshine,. The course we laid out was a simple one, enabling the hounds to find their stride and eye again. On the day our President John Steers Judged along with an Arnerican Pat Flynn. The day was fine but cold, with most of the hounds running well and we ended up with a number of good running Afghans. I still have a soft spot for this breed and to see them bounding around the field with ears flapping and all that coat flowing is wonderful. We ended up with forty four hounds and four breeds represented and Best in Field went to a Whippet of Gay Robertson, Moonlake Mackerel.

The next meeting was at Blindley Heath near Lingfield, this was going to be a test as only Keith could get there on the Saturday. On the day Martin and Kathy Webb and Marty Doll, helped set up the tent and the fencing, which left the course and PA etc to be set up on the day. In the six weeks since Nick & myself saw the field the grass had really grown, which meant it had to be cut around the line. Still we got it done just in time, only to find Nick had been too adventurous with the course, so a slight change was made and then it worked OK. The day was cold and dry, a big dissapointment that only thirtyone hounds turned up to run around this very demanding course. The day was marred by one incident between handlers, but otherwise enjoyed by all. Keith Searle and Sarah Pirie were the judges and after five breeds running the Best in Field was declared as the Whippet of Mrs.P.Rogers Copsebury Country Copy at Nightleighs.

Well done to all the class and Best in Breed winners from these events and let us hope more will attend the rest of the meetings, as alot of hard work goes into these events, all you have to do is turn up and run your hounds. So please support us. We are still trying to run the next meeting at Radway but Joe Amsell has told Nick that the farmer wants back the fields that Joe rents, so it might have to be changed at the last moment, hopefully by the time this newsletter goes out we will know.

Anyone who is on the Internet can now see items
about the BSFA by courtesy of Steve Tillotson who is
mad about Afghans, so he told me. If you want to see

I have not yet got the modem for my computer so at the moment this will have to be up to you other computer buffs to keep me informed of any happen- ings. Talking to an American friend at the weekend, he said his wife corresponds all over the world on the Internet about dogs. In her case it is Terriers .

One little bit of interest that faithful Lure Coursing regulars in the shape of Dessie (To- erag Out And About With Derohan) and Lester (Laurelcote Linum at Derohan) are currently appearing in the latest Boddington's Beer advert on the TV. Caroline goes on to say 'don't blink or you'll miss them, needless to say, but it is yet another instance of how versatile Whippets can be - every home should have one or two, or three or ..! !'

See you all soon, keep those entries coming in Spring is around the corner.
