Included In a book published in 1958, Illustrated by Gladys Emerson Cook who specialized in drawing and painting dogs, cats, horses, and other animals. Her work appears in permanent collections at the Metropolitan Museum, the Library of Congress as well as many private collections.

The illustration was accompanied by the following words...

""AFGHAN HOUND - The Afghan dates back 5000 years. It originated in Afghanistan, and it has the coe coat that can withstand the extremes of heat and cold and a galloping gait that can overcome any obstacle with great ease and speed. The afghan is a true aristrocrat, dignified and aloof. Although its tail is set low, the tail carriage is high. The hounds hunt so much in thickets that it is only by watching the tails that the movements of the dogs can be followed. Since its hip bones are higher tha those of the ordinary dog, it can run about the hilly country with ease; its movements, in fact, are rather like those of a monkey.

Afghans attract much attention by their dignity and their beautiful coats. They make excellent companions.""
